Irwin’s cabin had a porch running across the front, and I sat on the edge with my feet in the dirt and my face between my knees. Clara sat beside me and put her arm around my shoulders.

“Ace, my cousin has only one flaw: she was in the Coast Guard instead of the Marines. But that’s because she wanted to rescue people, and she has. Many times. I’m not saying you need rescuing. I am saying I trust her absolutely. It’s cabin 4-C over there. Will you go there with me, now?”
“I will. Clara, please tell my parents where I’ve gone. Ask them for a couple pairs of my shorts. You know I’m on my ragged edge today. If they ask, tell them I’ll come talk with them in a couple of days, that’s all I can say right now. Thank you for supporting me; you know I appreciate it.”
“Shorts?”
“I think one reason I’m so tense and acting weird is my being naked. It’s affecting my thinking and my judgment. Maybe I can talk to Iris with my brain instead.”
Clara delivered my shorts along with two kisses.
“This kiss is from your mom—she says, ‘Take all the time you need.’ And this one’s from me, because if you ever feel comfortable again, my arms are always open to you.”
“And legs?” I asked automatically, sadly expecting rejection.
“Of course. But only if you want me.”
“Clara ... I’ve always wanted you. I’m just having trouble with myself. Thanks for the shorts.”
I pulled on the shorts and walked inside. Iris took one look and put on a T-shirt and shorts, too.
“I wasn’t expecting you to dress, Iris. I told Clara being exposed was making me tense and feeling weird.”
“You don’t have to be tense with me, Ace. I’m not part of what you’ve been caught in. You talk, I stay steady. After the week you’ve had, one more naked body isn’t going to overload you.”
“Still ... before I saw you, Tina said you were beautiful. She just claimed her tits were better.”

“That’s why we should be dressed, so I can think.”
