Chapter 20: Round and Round

“Hello, ladies,” I said. “Tina and I would like to pickle the flowers this morning. What do you say?”
Poppy scowled. “My back is sore this morning. But you can play with Lily and Jared, while Liam and I sit by the court and catcall you.”
“OK. But who hurt your back? Liam, or Jared? Were they clumsy?” Tina asked.
“It wasn’t them, it was my fault. Um, I was trying a difficult ... a stressful position with my back to Liam’s chest and Jared on top and it just torqued my back somehow.”
“You were the meat in their sandwich?” I teased.
“Yeah. And I learned there’s a right way and a wrong way to DP.”
Tina winced. “Poor Poppy. At least you don’t have to tell your coach in school, ‘I can’t play today from a sex-related injury.’ That would cause a lot of gossip.”
“You have no idea. I went to a strict girls-only religious school. Lily almost got expelled when Percy fell out of her locker.”
“Percy? Who’s Percy?” I asked.

“Tina, let’s get in line. I’m going to need coffee, bacon, and eggs to keep up with all you sex-crazed women.”
While we were in line together, I asked Tina if she planned on spending the night with me.
“Yes, Ace, but we should stay in your cabin. Ella is going to be ... wait a minute. I need to go check.”
She went over to her father for a quick chat. Ella was with him, and they seemed to come to an agreement.
Tina returned and said, “Ace, my father’s spending the night with Ella and her cousin Iris.”
“Great, that sounds perfect. Iris is a pretty name; is she good-looking?”
After a tiny expression of jealousy crossed Tina’s face, she told me, “Yes. Iris is very attractive. But not as pretty as me.”
“Of course. There’s no one in this whole camp that is as pretty as you.”
“Oh, you’re just saying that. But I do have better boobs than Iris. Or Ella.”
“Or anyone else here, gorgeous.”
She gave me a skeptical look, but I was completely sincere. We carried our trays back to the tables, and I noticed Irwin and Ella with another woman.
“That’s Iris?” I asked. “That hideous hag with Ella and your father?”
“Shut up, Ace. Don’t lie to me. Ever!” Tina became quiet and studied her tray. When she sat there for many long seconds, she started speaking to me again, softly and coolly.
“Ace, I expect you to be honest with me. Every day, all the time. I’ve been badly hurt in the past. My dad can be very rigid and strict, probably a lot more than most fathers. But I’m always trusting that he would never, ever lie to me. Semper Fidelis: always faithful. If that’s too high a standard, I’ll step back and you can have Laura and Clara and the flowers for fun. I’m not asking for anything else, but I’m insisting on honesty.”
“Wow, Tina. Um, no pressure. I can’t come up with the proper Latin, but I can promise to be ‘always truthful.’ At least, that’s what I can say until we get married.”
I grinned at her, watching for her reaction to that little conversational bomb.
“In return, Ace, I make the same promise. Always truthful, until we get married.”
Her eyes sparkled. From sentiment or from humor? I stopped evaluating everything and put my arms around her for a long and intense kiss.
“Always,” I told her after we broke apart.
Tina and I played a forceful game of pickleball against Lily and Jared. Afterwards, we took pity on our fellow diners by rinsing off in the poolside shower house before lunch.
Liam impressed me with his self-control. Taking turns, Jared and Lily supported him while each of them washed his body with many extra touches and caresses.
Tina suggested, “I bet you’d like me to wash you like that.”
“Yes and no,” I told her. “Yes, I’d love it, but I’m constantly worried about getting expelled from camp from having a public and visible erection.”
“So, you’re saying we can wash each other in the cabin where we’re private?”

“Something to look forward to, then. Ace, let’s finish up and go get lunch, I’m starving.”
