“Good morning.” Robert says when he sees Jane begin her reluctant morning movements.
“So tired.” Jane says. “And sore.”
“I can drive today, if you want.” Robert suggests.
“That would be worse.” Jane says. “At least I don’t get carsick if I’m driving.”
“True.” Robert says, just as happy not to be the one driving the large van.
“Is she still asleep?” Jane asks, turning over to peek at Lucia.
“Not anymore.” Lucia groans.
“How are you feeling this morning?” Jane asks.
“Queasy.” Lucia admits.
“I brought something for you to try.” Jane says, getting out of bed, and digging through her bag.
Holding out one pill, she says. “Let it dissolve on your tongue, and then swallow. I’ll go grab you a drink.”
“Thanks.” Lucia says quietly, popping in the pill.
“Are you going to be ok with the drive today?” Robert asks.
“I hope so.” Lucia says. “Do you think I can sit up front? It might help, and then if I get sick, I can at least aim out the window.”
“Whatever you need.” Robert says.
“Here you go.” Jane says, holding out a water bottle. “Hopefully that helps at least a bit.”
“Thank you.” Lucia says. “I don’t know what is going on, but I’m so tired of feeling sick.”
“It’s been a bit over a week now, right?” Jane asks, sitting on the edge of the bed and looking at her closely.
Lucia nods.
“Did Tom or Rosie have any ideas for a doctor?” Robert asks. “I really would like Lucia to get checked out. And Jia too, of course.”
“Tom is working on something for us.” Jane says. “Lots of doctors are being held back still, to make sure the hospitals are staffed.”
“Nurses too?” Robert asks, and Jane nods. “Is that why the only ones we found were either recent graduates, or still in school?”
“I think so.” Jane says. “Samira made it through because she had just graduated, and Frank’s nurse because she was going back to school. If either of them had been employed, they probably would have been held back too.”
“But he thinks he can get us one?” Robert asks.
“Tom is keenly aware that the town may lose the only doctor who is still practicing at any time.” Jane says. “He said they even asked the old town doctor that’s been retired for nearly twenty years to see a few patients. If he finds one, and we end up with her, we’ll have to promise to make her available to the town. Which could be a good thing, it means another income stream for us.”
“So does he have someone in mind?” Robert presses. “Or is he just cold calling to see if he can find a doctor that another county is willing to lose?”
“He didn’t say.” Jane says. “I got the impression he had someone in mind, though.”
Reaching down, she checks Lucia’s forehead. “No temperature, at least. Do you think you can get up and get moving? Most of the other girls are getting ready.”
“I think so.” Lucia says. “I’m going to grab a shower, and get ready.”
“Is it going to bother you if we eat and drive?” Jane asks. “Food smells and all.”
“I don’t think so.” Lucia says. “Nothing in particular seems to trigger it, other than waking up.”
Jane glances at Robert, but he doesn’t react to this. “Ok. I’m going to get everyone else up and moving, and check on Jia.”
“Do you want me to wake up Lindsey?” Robert asks. “I’d really rather you didn’t do it, with how unstable she has been the last week.”
“I’ll let Reyna do it.” Jane says. “I have no intention of getting into a fist fight in a back yard in Arkansas. If my family ever found out, I’d never heard the end of it.”
“You might be the only person in your family who hasn’t gotten into a fight in a backyard.” Robert says with a grin. “It’s basically a family tradition.”
“Exactly.” Jane says. “And I’m breaking the cycle.”
“Last chance to use the bathroom before we get moving.” Jane calls as the girls load the back of the van. “We are grabbing a quick breakfast, but after that, no stops until lunch. I want to be home by dinner time.”
“Why do we have to leave so early?” Lindsey complains.
“I just said, I want to be home by dinner time.” Jane says. “Please pay attention, teacher.”
A small giggle erupts from Isabel, provoking a glare from Lindsey.
“I was paying attention.” Lindsey says. “Why do we need to get home by dinner time?”
“I’m tired of eating fast food.” Jane says. “I just want to be in my own bed.”
“So we are going to the old house?” Lindsey asks.
“We are going to the new house.” Jane says. “We are going to drop off a few people, and grab a few more, and then we are going to pack up the old house. Thankfully we have lots of people to help carry boxes and furniture, so moving should be nice and quick.”
“I’ll stay at the new house.” Lindsey says, and when Jane stares at her, she adds. “I need to start teaching Isabel and your nephew.”
“It’s Friday.” Jane says. “We’ll be doing most of the moving tomorrow and the next day.”
“My back kind of hurts too.” Lindsey says, reaching back to grab it. “I think I need to have it looked at.”
Jane smiles at her, and says. “There are lots of light things to carry. LOTS of things.”
“I need to work on my lesson plans.” Lindsey objects.
“We’ll stop and get you a notebook and pen before we get on the interstate.” Jane says. “You’ll have hours to work on them while we drive. And even more time during the trips between the old and new houses.”
Lindsey opens her mouth to speak again, but Amber cuts her off. “Isabel, can you go check on Jia and Samira? Let them know we’ll be inside in a moment to help her to the van. You can wait with them until we get there.”
Isabel runs off inside to carry the message, and Amber turns to Lindsey. “Your rudeness and disobedience to our Mistress is unacceptable. Mistress, may I have permission to correct her behavior?”
“Fuck you.” Lindsey says, voice quavering ever so slightly. “Just try to put a hand on me; I’ll knock you out.”
“STOP!” Jane says loudly. After a moment, she continues in a more normal tone. “Lindsey, this clearly is not working. I had hoped that after your night on the porch, you would have realized that your attitude is making things worse for all of us, but you most of all. Consider yourself on probation. One more screw-up, and you will be leaving the house.”
“Robert won’t just let you put me back in the auction.” Lindsey says defiantly.
Jane sighs, reaching into her purse, but stops herself from pulling her pepper spray. After a moment to breathe, she says. “I spoke with Robert last night. If I choose to take you to an auction, he isn’t going to stop me.”
Lindsey glares at her, but doesn’t respond. Eventually Lindsey blinks, opening the van door to climb inside.
“Reyna, keep a close eye on her today.” Jane says.
“Yes, Mistress.” Reyna says. “Do you want me to go help with Jia, or stay here?”
“Emily and I can help with Jia.” Amber says.
“We’ll manage.” Jane says. “We’ll be back in a moment.”
Walking inside, Jane finds Robert and Lucia packing the last of their things in the master bedroom. “Robert, we may need your help carrying Jia out. We had another Lindsey incident. She and Reyna are waiting in the van.”
“You didn’t pepper spray her near the van, did you?” Robert groans. “That stuff lingers, we are going to need to scrub her to get it off. And that’s assuming it didn’t get into the upholstery...”
“I was good.” Jane says. “No one got sprayed. But I’m just about done with her, unless you are willing to let me put her in her place.”
“Let’s see how she is when we are finally settled back in at home.” Robert says. “She wasn’t really much of a problem before we left.”
“She was a problem.” Jane says. “We just didn’t notice it, because it was framed as worry for her grandmother.”
“She’s gone through a lot.” Robert says, hefting his laptop bag and suitcase. “Let’s just get home, and then we can worry about it. I’m going to put this in the van, and then I’ll be back to help with Jia.”
Jane follows Robert and Lucia out of the room, breaking off at the front door to go to the room where Jia spent the night.
“How are you feeling this morning?” Jane asks, peering into the room to see Samira packing, while Isabel sits on the bed next to Jia.
“Still alive.” Jia says softly, before grabbing her head.
“Headache?” Jane asks.
“Everything ache.” Jia says. “I feel like I got run over by a truck.”
“That’s not far off what happened.” Samira says.
“Do you want to try to walk to the van?” Jane asks. “If not, we can carry you.”
“I...” Jia starts to speak.
“Carry.” Samira says sternly. “The last thing we need is for you to fall, and injure yourself worse.”
“I made it to the bathroom earlier.” Jia objects.
“You wouldn’t have if I had been awake.” Samira says. “You need to rest.”
“I’ll go get a few people to help.” Jane says, walking back down the hall to find Lindsey, Emily, Robert, and Lucia waiting in the living room. “Ok, I think we are ready.”
When they get up, Jane says. “Not you, Lucia. Why don’t you wait in the van?”
“I can help.” Lucia says with determination.
“Can you take Isabel to the van for me?” Amber asks. “And keep her away from Lindsey until we get out there?”
“Sure.” Lucia says, walking into the bedroom and emerging a few moments later with Isabel in tow.
“Can I sit by the window?” Isabel asks excitedly.
“Of course you can.” Amber says with a smile.
“She’s so cute.” Jane says, giving Amber a little hug as they watch Isabel and Lucia head out the door.
“She is.” Amber says.
“Ok, let’s go get Jia.” Jane says.
They file into the small room, Robert bringing up the rear. When Jia sees them, she winces, before trying to bury herself in the covers.
“Jia?” Samira asks, moving quickly to her side. She tries to move the covers, but is unable to dislodge them from Jia’s death-grip.
After a moment, a soft whimpering noise emerges from the blankets, and Jane realizes that Jia is crying.
“Out.” Jane says quietly, shooing everyone but Samira out the door.
“Jia?” Jane says. “It’s Jane, only Samira and I are here now.”
After a moment, the covers move slightly, and Jane can see part of Jia’s face. “He’s gone?” Jia’s voice trembles as she asks the question.
“He’s gone.” Jane says. “I’ll get Reyna to come help carry you instead.”
“Please.” Jia says. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok.” Jane says soothingly. “You’ve been through a lot. He’s going to be in the van with us, though. Are you going to be ok?”
“If I don’t see him.” Jia says.
Jane motions for Samira to follow her out, and when they emerge, they find an anxious group waiting for them.
“Is she ok?” Robert asks anxiously.
“She freaked out when she saw a man entering the room.” Jane says. “Robert, can you go wait in the van? Maybe sit towards the back, and we can put her towards the front.”
“Of course.” Robert says.
“Send Reyna back when you get there.” Jane says.
Nearly ten hours later, just after dark, the van finally pulls past the gates to the old school.
“Finally.” Jane says, throwing the van into park. “Can we all agree to never drive to Arkansas again?”
Murmurs of agreement meet this, before the van door is thrown open, and girls begin to emerge, making a beeline for the front door.
Samira pauses, looking at Jia. “I’ll be right back; I’m going to find a few girls to help you inside.”
“I really have to pee.” Jia says, desperation bleeding into her voice.
Samira looks around the van. “I can ask Robert to help me get you in.” She says quietly. “If you want.”
Jia nods, closing her eyes tightly. “Just do it.”
Samira looks back at Robert, who slides out of his seat. “We are going to support you on each side. I don’t want to risk dropping you. Can you slide to the edge of the seat?”
Eventually they manage to get Jia on her feet in between them, and slowly help her inside, Samira warning her about the stairs when they reach the entrance.
“Do you need help, Master?” Megan asks at the doorway.
“Just keep the door open for us.” Samira says.
Eventually they get Jia up the stairs, and Samira says. “Megan, swap with Robert. We need to get her to the bathroom.”
Robert shuffles to the side to allow Megan to help support Jia, and the girls awkwardly shuffle down the hall.
“Daddy?” Robert hears, and turning, he sees a blur, before the thankfully light Mei crashes into him.
“Hello, Sweetheart.” He says, embracing her tightly.
“I missed you so much!” Mei says. “If you leave again, you have to bring me.”
“Hopefully this won’t happen again.” Jane says from behind them. Robert looks up, seeing the rest of the crew behind her. “I got some reinforcements to help unload the van. Mei, is dinner ready?”
“It’s in the oven, keeping warm, Domina.” Mei says, disengaging from Robert.
“Go ahead and bring it up, so we can eat.” Jane says. “I know I’m starving.”
As everyone disperses, Robert walks around the first floor, trying to find an unoccupied bathroom.
“Lost in your own house?” He hears, and turning, he sees Jenna seated in the library.
“It’s a big house.” Robert says. “Where is the kid?”
“He’s around here somewhere.” Jenna says. “One of your girls is supposed to be watching him.”
“You are his mother.” Robert says. “These girls aren’t your nannies. Or your mother.”
“They may as well do something useful.” Jenna says. “They are terribly lazy. And some of them smell.”
“None of them smell.” Robert says gruffly. “They are all amazing in their own ways, and none of them are lazy.” After a moment of hesitation, he concedes. “At least, none of the ones you’ve met yet.”
“They do smell.” Jenna says. “And the food is awful. That girl can’t cook at all. I just wanted a nice, simple casserole, and she couldn’t manage it.”
“Mei’s an amazing cook.” Robert says, growing aggravated as he always does when he is around Jenna. “And, unless something has changed, you can’t even make a PB&J sandwich.”
“I shouldn’t have to cook.” Jenna says. “That’s what the help is for. I’m just glad things are finally getting back to the way they used to be. I’m wasted on cooking and cleaning.”
“You are certainly wasted.” Robert says quietly, and then a bit more loudly. “They aren’t your help. Your name is coming off the approved handler list. Don’t try to give them any more orders, because they won’t be taking them from you.”
“That’s not right.” Jenna says. “How do I tell them how to do my laundry if I can’t talk to them?”
“Do your own laundry.” Robert says. “Or teach your spawn how to do it.”
Robert steps out of the room before he can say something he regrets.
When nearly everyone is seated in the dining room, Jane stands up. “Isabel, can you come here please?”
Isabel approaches warily, a bit apprehensive of the crowd in the room. When she reaches Jane’s side, Jane continues. “As you know, we’ve got some new additions to the family. This is little Isabel. We’ve also got a new girl, Jia, but she’s going to be remaining upstairs for the next few days while she recovers from her ordeal. Please make them both feel welcome.”
Jane goes around the room, introducing everyone, before sending Isabel back to her seat, and taking her own, beginning to finally enjoy her meal.
“This is delicious.” Robert says extra loudly. “I’ve missed your cooking so much, Mei.”
“Thank you.” Mei says, blushing slightly.
Jenna ignores it, turning to Jane. “Why are we eating with the slaves?”
“They are our family.” Jane says shortly. “If you don’t like it, you can eat in your room.”
“I just don’t think it’s a good thing to teach children.” Jenna says. “I guess you don’t really have to worry about that, but I have a kid. Thankfully he knows that this is not normal.” She points around the room at this last sentence.
“Where is your precious Riker?” Jane asks. “Killing animals? Lighting fires?”
Jenna stands up, bumping the table and causing everyone to look at her, before storming out of the room.
“He’s in the mechanical room, Mistress.” Alexia says quietly from next to her. “He wouldn’t come up for dinner. He’s been playing with the tools down there recently.”
“What tools?” Robert asks.
“I don’t really know, Master.” Alexia says.
“I caught him with a saw the other day, Master.” Megan says. “He was trying to sneak it up the stairs.”
“Great.” Robert says, looking at Jane. “Surely there is somewhere else they can go. What about your great-uncle in Arizona?”
“The sex offender?” Jane asks. “The one that was perving on Jenna online when she was like 17?”
“There has to be someone.” Robert says.
“If there was, she’d be on her way there now.” Jane says.
“Maybe you can set up a dating profile for her?” Robert suggests. “Then she can be someone else’s problem.”
Down the table, Robert catches a glimpse of Isabel whispering to Amber. She responds quickly, and then asks. “Master, Mistress, would you mind if we discussed that later?”
Jane looks down the table, the tiniest bit of color draining from her face as she realizes that Isabel is still in the room. “Good idea, Amber. So, tomorrow we are going to load up, and drive to the old house. Samira and Jia will be staying back, as will Lucia and Robert. Isabel, do you think you could be Samira’s assistant nurse tomorrow?”
