“Good Morning, Ladies.” Jane says, looking down the table at the assembled group. “I’ve got a few things, before you all leave for the day. First, I wanted to clarify Mei’s status. For the foreseeable future, she is off the sleeping schedule. That leaves us with just Reyna actively trying to get pregnant. Since Lucia is already pregnant, I’m not going to ask for a new volunteer just yet. I know many of you are not trying NOT to get pregnant, and I don’t want everyone pregnant at once.”
In the middle of this, Mei’s head slumps, cheeks burning with shame as she stares at her plate.
“Secondly, I wanted to address Isabel’s education.” Jane says. “We did a trial yesterday, with her shadowing Samira. It went well, so we are going to continue that for now, until we get either get a proper teacher, or one of us is forced to take up the role. Amber and I both feel that hands on experience is more beneficial to Isabel than book learning alone. Taylor, today she’ll be going with you. Let her watch, and help a bit if you feel comfortable.”
“No problem.” Taylor says, mouth half full of pancakes.
“Now, onto the third item on today’s agenda...” Jane says. “While no one lacked for enthusiasm when you welcomed Robert home, a few of you could use some work on your technique. The good news is that several of you are also extremely talented. If any of you wanted to put in some extra work, our three winners from the other night are all very qualified to give some pointers. Not that they have to help, if they would prefer not to.”
“I can help.” Taylor says. “Are we just wanting to do blowjobs, or should we be giving some tips on how to play well with each other?”
“I want to play well with others.” Layne says quickly.
“Nope.” Megan says, nearly knocking over her chair in her haste to get to her feet. “I can’t.”
“Maybe just blowjobs for now.” Jane says, a moment after the door slams shut behind Megan. “Amber, can you see what is going on there? She doesn’t need to help with this, but storming off during breakfast is hardly polite behavior.”
“Yes, Mistress.” Amber says, the smooth and quiet motion of her sliding back her chair quietly and leaving the room contrasting starkly against Megan’s hasty escape.
“I’m sure Taylor would be happy to work with you, Layne.” Jane says.
“I’m fine with teaching too.” Alexia says. “Taylor is definitely better than I am.”
After a few others in the room express interest, Jane says. “Maybe you can catch Robert in between meetings for some practice during the day. I’ll leave it to you to work out the details.”
“Whose night is it?” Layne asks. “And can I join? I need to practice playing well with others, I’ve mostly only played with myself.”
“It’s my night.” Emily says, unable to stop herself from smiling. “Amber always joins me, but I can see if she is ok with you watching us.”
“I can learn a lot from watching.” Layne says. “Like I did last week.”
“Only four to our bed, when it’s time to sleep, until we get the master suite done.” Jane says. “Watching is fine, but I need my sleep.”
“Will you talk to them about getting me a truck soon?” Taylor asks as she takes a curve a bit more aggressively than Amber would like. “I’m going to get filthy on a call one of these days, and I’m going to get bawled out for messing up the car.”
“I’ll talk to Jane about it later tonight, if I get the chance.” Amber says, holding tightly onto the arm rest.
“Thanks.” Taylor says, as she throws on her blinker at the last moment, ripping the wheel to the left as she takes the turn into the driveway without slowing.
“Goats!” Isabel says from the backseat, looking into the field they were driving along. “What’s that one?”
“Where?” Taylor asks, distractedly looking into the back seat to see where Isabel is pointing, before looking over at the creature. “Looks like a donkey.”
“Eyes on the road.” Amber says firmly. After Taylor begins looking forward again, Amber asks. “Why would you put a donkey with goats?”
“They may have had a coyote problem in the past.” Taylor says. “Donkeys are good at keeping them away. Coyotes don’t love getting kicked in the head.”
“Oh...” Isabel says.
“Here we are.” Taylor says, stopping abruptly in front of a gate. “We’ll have to walk from here.”
Grabbing her bag, and getting out of the car, Taylor hops the gate first, before turning to help Isabel, and then Amber climb over.
“Which one is it?” Amber asks, looking around the field.
“That one, over there.” Taylor says, setting off at a brisk pace.
“What about those cows?” Amber says, a tone of worry entering her voice. “Are they friendly?”
“They aren’t too bad. If they charge you, yell at them and wave your arms.” Taylor says. “We are going to be looking at the paint horse with the bandage on her hoof. I had to fix it a few days ago, we just need to unwrap it, and see if it’s healing.”
“What if yelling and waving our arms doesn’t work?” Amber asks, tightening her grip on Isabel’s hand.
“I’d suggest moving out of their way, and hopping the fence.” Taylor says. “Getting run over isn’t fun.”
Isabel stops, digging in her heels when Amber keeps walking. “Wait.”
Taylor stops, looking back at them. “You’ll be fine. Just stay with me.”
“You promise?” Isabel asks.
“I won’t let you get run over.” Taylor promises. “Besides, these cows are pretty calm. And none of them have calves right now.”
“Does that matter?” Amber asks.
“It does with some cows.” Taylor says, stopping a few feet from the horse she came to inspect. “There was a farm we got called to a lot, where the cow would charge us any time she had a calf. And some of the time when she didn’t.”
“Let’s take a look here.” Taylor says, patting the horse on the side, before running her hand down the leg to undo the bandage. “No signs of infection, and she was putting weight on it. Both of those are good signs. Isabel, come a little closer, and take a look.”
Isabel approaches hesitantly, stopping a few feet away.
“Hard to see anything from all the way over there.” Taylor says.
When Isabel approaches a bit closer, Taylor lifts the hoof again, nodding at it. “See, no pus leaking out, and nothing terribly discolored, right?”
Isabel nods, glancing back longingly at the safety of Amber.
“We just need to put a little more medicine on it, and then we can wrap it back up.” Taylor says, reaching into her bag. Handing Isabel the bandage and medicine, she lifts the hoof again. “Smear some of that onto the hoof.”
Isabel reaches into the jar, scooping a bit out, and gingerly applying it.
“A bit more, and use a little more pressure.” Taylor says. “We want it to get into the wound.”
“Like that?” Isabel asks, getting more of the medicine, and hesitantly pressing it in.
“Yep.” Taylor says. “Now we just need to wrap it up.”
Freeing one of her hands, Taylor reaches over, wrapping the hoof with ease that evinced years of practice.
Letting go of the hoof, Taylor pats the horse one more time, before wiping her hands on her jeans. “All done. That wasn’t so hard, was it?”
Isabel shakes her head, before wiping her hands on her jeans in imitation of Taylor.
“Back to the car.” Taylor says. “You’ll like the next farm a bit more. They’ve got some goats we need to look at.”
“Is Sheriff Miller around?” Robert asks an elderly woman sitting at a desk at the entrance to the Sheriff’s portion of the courthouse basement, all of her attention on a crossword puzzle.
“Rick!” The woman yells without looking up. “Visitors!”
In a slightly quieter tone, she says. “He’ll be out in a minute.”
“We’ve talked about this, Helen.” Rick says a minute later when he emerges from a hallway. “Just pick up the phone, and hit the button with my name on it. There is no need to yell.”
“This is easier.” Helen says, still not looking up.
Rick huffs in exasperation, before looking up at Robert, flanked by Jia and Reyna. “Come on back.” Rick says, nodding towards the hallway he just came from, before turning to head back in that direction.
“Sorry about that.” Rick says after they clear the lobby. “My dispatcher got detained, and I haven’t found a suitable replacement. Helen did the job years ago, back when I was just a deputy, and it seems I’m stuck with her for now.”
“My company is having the same issue.” Robert says. “I’ve still got an opening in my department, because everyone I’ve tried to move into my department can’t be spared right now.”
“You don’t have someone in your house who can do it?” Rick asks.
“I’d rather not.” Robert says. “Even if my company would allow it.”
Coming to a stop in front of a large metal door, Rick pulls out a set of keys, opening first that door, and then another one, this one looking like a stereotypical jail cell door.
“This is the evidence room.” Rick says, stepping back into the hallway. “Not that there is any real evidence in there right now. I’ve got the rest in my office. Feel free to take a look, ladies.”
Jia steps in immediately, sorting through the various weapons on metal racks, propped up in corners, and laying on the floor. Reyna follows a bit more slowly, eyes wide at the sight of so many weapons.
“I wanted to thank you again for all of the help yesterday.” Robert says. “That would have taken us forever to get done.”
“I was happy to do it.” Rick says. “Kris really took a shine to your Chinese gal.”
“I heard.” Robert says. “What’s her deal?”
“Hell if I know.” Rick says, shrugging. “She lived with her mother until she passed about twenty years ago, and since then, she’s been on her own. She left for a few years for college, but I don’t know where, or if that’s where the obsession with Chinese stuff came from. She’s not exactly talkative.”
“What does she do?” Robert asks.
“I have no idea.” Rick says. “Nothing, as far as I can tell. She’s got a few animals, but as far as I know, she’s never had a job, or anything to really keep her busy.”
“Odd.” Robert says.
“Here we go.” Jia says, picking up a rifle from the pile in front of her, checking to make sure it is unloaded before throwing it to her shoulder. Taking it back down, she pops out the magazine, before working the action a few times. “This one is in 22LR, it should work for training.”
“Great.” Robert says.
Jia hands it to Reyna, before going back to digging.
“Have you ever used something like that before?” Robert asks.
“This wasn’t really the kind of thing my family had.” Reyna says.
“Ooh...” Jia says, struggling the tiniest bit to hold up a large rifle with a scope. “It’s not on the list, but can we keep this one?”
“What is it?” Robert asks, looking at it with curiosity. “And why would you need something that big, unless you were going to Africa?”
“ .50 cal.” Jia says. “Get some AP rounds, and I could hit anyone on our property with this, even behind cover. I was hoping I might find a .308, or a .300 Win Mag, but this is way better.”
Robert looks at Rick for help, but just receives a shrug. “Up to you.” He says. “I need to get rid of this stuff eventually, and get my evidence room back.”
“Put it to the side, and let me think about it.” Robert says. “We only have so much room in the gun safe.”
“Can we get rid of some of the other stuff?” Jia says. “We don’t really need that stuff.”
“No.” Robert says shortly. Looking over at Rick, he asks. “Any chance we can put some stuff aside, and pick it up once Chad’s guys finish walling off our armory room?”
“I guess I can make that work.” Rick says. “I’ve got a few other people interested in picking through this stuff, so make sure it ends up in my office.”
After a few more minutes of examination, Jia gets excited again. “Here we go. It’s a poverty pony, but it’ll do as a trainer after everyone gets used to the 22.”
“Poverty pony?” Robert asks inquisitively.
“Don’t ask me.” Reyna says quietly.
“I think that’s it for this room.” Jia says. “You said you have more in your office?”
“Did we need this many guns?” Jane asks incredulously, staring at the weaponry being carried through the front door. “I love shooting as much as anyone, but this feels excessive.”
“Rick put more aside for us.” Robert says. “This is all that will fit in the safe. Jia would have emptied the building if we had let her.”
“Most of it was garbage.” Jia says. “But I did manage to find a few decent guns. May I start training volunteers?”
“Let’s discuss that at breakfast tomorrow.” Jane says. “Is there more that needs to be carried in?”
“Ammo is in the trunk.” Robert says. “Two cans and a few boxes.”
“We’ll grab it.” Jane says, motioning for Alexia to follow. “Reyna, can you give us a hand with some furniture later? Megan is going to grab a few things from her old house.”
“Sure.” Reyna says.
