“Good Morning.” Jane says, stepping into Robert’s office, with Mei following closely behind holding his breakfast tray. “You got an early start.”

“My back was killing me.” Robert admits. “Staying in bed was just making it worse. And since I can’t take a hot shower to help, distracting myself with work seemed like the best solution.”

“I’ll find something while I’m out today.” Jane says. “Tom wants Kendra to start at the clinic today. Maybe they’ll have something we can use until I can get something shipped in.”

“She just got here.” Robert says. “He can’t give her a day or two to settle in?”

“It doesn’t sound like it.” Jane says. “I’m going to have her peek in on you in a few minutes, before I drive her into town. If I can find what I need, maybe you can get that shower soon.”

“Thank you, my love.” Robert says, leaning forward for a kiss. Looking beyond Jane, he asks. “So, what’s for breakfast?”

“Eggs Benedict.” Mei says proudly. “I made the sauce from scratch.”

“It only took three tries.” Jane says, poking the girl in the side lightly.

“I’m not used to making sauces like that, Domina.” Mei pouts. “And I wanted it to be perfect for my Daddy.”

“Thank you, sweetheart.” Robert says, beckoning her forward, and taking the tray. Cutting a piece, he quickly takes a bite, grunting with satisfaction. “It’s really good.”

Mei beams, glancing quickly at Jane, before lowering her eyes again.

“You did really good.” Robert reiterates, before pulling the girl forward, onto his lap, for a kiss.

“Thank you.” Mei says, happiness radiating from her face as she leans into his chest.

Clearing her throat, Jane says. “He’s spoken for today, Mei. I’m going to let Kendra know about work today.” Jane says, before striding out of the room.

When Jane reaches Kendra’s room, she finds her on the floor, sweating profusely.

“Some of the other girls do exercises in the morning.” Jane says, leaning on the door frame. “I’m sure you’d be welcome to join them.”

Kendra twists, looking up at her. “Ok.”

After a moment’s awkward pause, Jane says. “I was hoping to give you the rest of the week to settle in, but they want you to start helping at the clinic today. Before that though, I was hoping you could peek at Robert’s back. He didn’t sleep much; it’s clearly bothering him.”

Sitting up, Kendra says. “I’ll go take a look. Do I have time to grab a shower before we leave?”

“I didn’t promise to have you there at a specific time.” Jane says with a devious grin. “You’ve got plenty of time for a shower. Do you want some breakfast? I can have Mei bring something up.”

“I’m not hungry.” Kendra says. “Do we have any scrubs I can wear? Or do I need to borrow something?”

“You’ll probably have to borrow from one of the girls for the next few days.” Jane says. “If you give me your sizes, I’ll get some stuff ordered for you.”

“Thank you.” Kendra says quietly.

“If you need something, just tell one of us.” Jane says. “You and Samira report to Lucia, but most of the girls have their phones, so any of them can put something on the shopping list for you.”

Kendra nods, before looking up at her. “Will I get a phone?”

“Eventually.” Jane says. “We try to give it a week or two, so we can get to know you, and make sure you are settled in a bit. We’ve had enough drama and incidents lately. Once the other girls and I are sure you are ready, and you understand the house rules, we’ll get you one.”

“Will I be able to let my family know where I am?” Kendra asks.

“Of course.” Jane says. “I should have thought about that yesterday. I’ll have Samira lend you her phone to use. Let them know you are safe, and that you’ll be in contact again once you get your phone.”

“Thank you.” Kendra says, eyes watering a bit as she tries to hold her emotions together.

“I can only imagine how hard this all is.” Jane says tentatively, unsure whether a hug would be welcome. “Robert and I didn’t vote for any of this, and I want you to know, you are safe here. This has to end eventually, and when it does, we’ll make sure you get back to your family.”

Kendra nods, turning away to face the wall as she holds her head in her hands.

“I’ll go tell Samira about the phone.” Jane says. “We can check on Robert right before we leave, just come downstairs when you are ready.”

“I need to find some of those waterproof bandages.” Jane says while buckling her seat belt. “I thought we could check the local pharmacy before I drop you off, and if they don’t have them, you could see if they have any at the clinic.”

“How small is this town?” Kendra asks. “Is there really just one pharmacy?”

“Very small.” Jane says. “Just a few restaurants, one local pharmacy that also sells guns, and a few other local stores. I think the biggest store in town is the farm store.”

“The other girls said you just moved here.” Kendra says. “Why would you move somewhere like this?”

“Well, it’s kind of hard to live with this many people in a house in a neighborhood.” Jane says. “None of us would ever be able to step foot outside without being watched. Robert grew up on a farm, with space, and he’s always wanted that again. This town offered us a good deal on the property, and it’s a beautiful area. It just worked out.”

Kendra nods, thinking for a moment, before tugging at the new collar Layne had given her. “And I really have to wear this thing all day?”

“Whenever you are off our property, although I would recommend it if you are going anywhere people in general can see you.” Jane says. “If you didn’t have one, people would think you were a runaway. The collar keeps you safe. People won’t be likely to mess with you if they know there is someone who will come after them if they do.”

“Mess with me...” Kendra says, drawing out the words for a moment. “What exactly am I supposed to do if someone does ‘mess with me’? And where exactly is the line for what people aren’t allowed to do to slaves?”

“The line is wherever I say it is.” Jane says, voice growing firm. “And for you, that’s that no one should be touching you, at all, for any reason. If they try to, you are to let them know that you have been ordered not to let anyone do that. If they still try to, kick up a fuss. Make a scene, and if people want to get upset, insist they call me. I stand behind my girls. And Tom, the BAA guy from last night, would be very unhappy if anyone messed with you, too.”

Kendra looks over at her, before nodding.

“I know you’ve got to be feeling anxiety about this.” Jane says as she pulls into the pharmacy. “I’ve got a ladies’ lunch at noon, but I’ll check in on you after that. And when I drop you off, I’ll make it clear to old Dr. Cook that I expect you to be treated respectfully.”

“Thank you.” Kendra says quietly.

“You’ll get through this.” Jane says, before popping open the door. “Now let’s see if we can’t find some of those waterproof bandages.”

“I found the bandages we need!” Jane says excitedly as she walks into Robert’s office.

“The pharmacy actually had them?” Robert asks incredulously.

“Nope.” Jane says, plopping down on the couch, before holding them up for Robert to see. “Kendra found some in the storage closet at the clinic when I dropped her off. Are you ready for me to put them on, so you can get your shower?”

“Absolutely.” Robert says, standing and shrugging off his shirt. As Jane peels off the existing bandages, he asks. “Did you talk to Layne about today yet?”

“I don’t think she was up when I left.” Jane says, while opening the package of waterproof bandages. “Amber is going to give her the news.”

“I need to talk to her today.” Robert says. “To get to know her a bit more, and make sure she is comfortable.”

“You are such a sweet man.” Jane says, smoothing the edge of the last bandage. “I’ll let Amber know to send her to you after they talk.”

“Thank you.” Robert says, turning around and pulling Jane into his arms, kissing her deeply, before holding onto her while gazing into her eyes. “How was Kendra when you dropped her off?”

“Nervous.” Jane says. “I’d like to get her a phone sooner than we normally do, so she can contact us if she needs to while she is working.”

“That’s a good idea.” Robert says. “Does anyone else not have one yet?”

“Just Jia.” Jane says. “She hasn’t asked about one, and she’s not really settled yet. I’ll see what the other girls think.”

“I’d rather give it to her sooner rather than later.” Robert says. “We don’t want her to feel picked on.”

“I know.” Jane says. “Why don’t you go shower? I’ll pop in to say goodbye on my way out.”

After giving her a final kiss, Robert lets go, watching Jane stride out of his office.

When Jane pulls into the parking lot of the deli, she spots an older woman standing behind her Lexus, smoking a cigarette. “That must be Lorraine.” Jane mutters as she pulls into the nearest space.

When she opens her door, she finds the woman waiting a few steps away. “Jane?” She asks.

“Yes, you must be Lorraine.” Jane says, getting out of the car.

“Yes.” Lorraine says, face breaking into a smile. “I’m so glad to finally meet you. I’ve been bugging Tom to invite you and your husband over for dinner, but apparently everyone is too busy nowadays.”

“It has been a busy few weeks.” Jane admits, returning the smile a bit nervously. “But things should start calming down soon, I hope.”

“After this auction business?” Lorraine asks. “Don’t you believe it. We’ll be busier than ever, dealing with drama and gossip and problems. And that’s before we account for any problems the girls actually cause.”

“Well, it’ll slow down for me, at least.” Jane says. “I’m ready for a week or two of peace.”

“Oh, darling.” Lorraine says. “You have to know that Tom is going to be calling you the first time one of these ladies gets into it with her husband over bringing in girls.”

“Nope.” Jane says, shaking her head. “I’m doing my part here at lunch, and the meeting later. But after that, I’m done for a while. I really, really don’t enjoy these social events.”

Lorraine laughs, taking a last drag on her cigarette before tossing it onto the ground. “No one really likes them. Or at least, no one who is sane. But we do what we must. And for now, that means going inside and meeting some very passive aggressive bitches.”

Jane sighs, following Lorraine as she walks into the deli, and then through a doorway to the side, leading to a private dining room containing around a dozen women, the youngest of which appears to be Cheryl.

“Ladies.” Lorraine says loudly as she approaches two empty seats towards the head of the table. “This is our new arrival, Jane. Please make her feel welcome.”

After a smattering of hellos, good mornings, and other greetings, Jane says. “Umm ... Hi everyone.”

“Please, sit.” Lorraine says, waving at the seat on the side, before taking her seat at the head of the table. “Did our other guest not show?”

“No.” Cheryl says. “I even went over this morning to offer to give her a ride. She didn’t even come out to say no, she sent one of her slaves.” At this, a discontented murmur goes through the room.

“Oh, my word.” An older lady says, a pinched expression on her face. “Are you sure she knew it was about lunch?”

“I told her twice.” Cheryl says. “ It was very rude. I would like to propose that she not be invited again, even if she asks to join.”

“She’s from out of town, right?” Another lady asks. Without waiting for a response, she continues. “Maybe they don’t do ladies’ lunches where she is from. The poor thing.”

“She’s from San Francisco, isn’t she, Cheryl?” Lorraine asks.

“Yes.” Cheryl says, face slightly pink with disapproval. “She’s very ... different.”

“A hippy?” Jane asks.

After a moment, Cheryl nods. “Yes, definitely one of THOSE people.”

“Well.” Lorraine says. “Maybe I can speak to her at the meeting this evening, and straighten things out. We need to be the bigger people, ladies. Not all of our new arrivals are going to understand how things work here right away.”

“All these strangers moving in wanting to change everything.” The oldest lady at the table says, shaking her head. “And bringing their foreign women with them. It’s indecent and unnatural. My nephew told me that some of them are vegetarians.”

After a moment’s shocked silence, a woman in her fifties, with a dumpy build, speaks up. “This really is Cheryl’s fault. She met them, and still let them move here. You must have known these people weren’t the right people to have here.”

“It’s not my fault!” Cheryl half yells, looking down the table at Lorraine. “Tom makes the decisions, not me.”

“You have to steer men.” One of the older ladies says. “They don’t really understand these things. Besides, it shouldn’t have come to that. If the new people are a bad fit, you have to find a way to get rid of them before they get to Tom.”

“I will mention our concerns to Tom.” Lorraine says in a firm but calming tone. “We need to move onto a new topic though, ladies. Cheryl, Tom tells me that you have something to announce?”

Cheryl sighs dramatically, before looking around the table. “Auctions start on Friday. It’s going to be announced at the town meeting tonight.”

“What did she say?” The oldest lady asks her neighbor. “Young people talk too fast. And too softly. And they murmur. I cannot stand murmuring.”

“They are going to start selling the girls from the hill on Friday.” The woman next to her says.

“Oh, those poor girls.” The oldest lady says. “That is simply indecent.”

“It’s disgusting.” The dumpy woman says. “My husband had better not even think about touching any of them.”

A murmur of agreement goes through the table, before Lorraine says. “Let’s not be hasty, Wanda.”

“You are going to let Tom touch those whores!?” Wanda exclaims. “If Rick even thinks about it, that’ll be the end of him.”

A chattering of agreement meets Wanda’s words.

“We are the Leading Ladies.” Lorraine says, rising to her feet. “Leading sometimes involves sacrifice. I don’t want my husband touching any other women either, but in this case, the alternative is worse. Edna, your great-niece is in the camp, isn’t she?”

One of the older ladies, apparently Edna, nods. “Yes, little Suzie.”

“And your granddaughter?” Lorraine asks loudly, looking at the oldest woman.

“Two of them.” The lady says. “And one of my nieces.”

“Cheryl, what happens if no one purchases the girls?” Lorraine asks.

“They get shipped out.” Cheryl says, just a tiny hint of a smile on her face. “Off to a regional auction.”

“And then you never see little Suzie again.” Lorraine says, looking at Edna, and then at the oldest woman. “Or your granddaughters, or niece.”

“It’s worse than that.” Jane says. “You’d have no idea what happened to them. You’d live every day not knowing if they are dead or alive. Ok, or in a terrible situation. Most owners don’t allow their girls to have phones, or communicate with their families. We rescued one of our girls from an abusive situation. She was in such bad shape, I thought she might be dead when I first saw her.”

“Maybe it’s for the best.” Cheryl says, after the moment of silence that meets Jane’s words. “A clean break for everyone. In a few years, the town goes back to normal, and we don’t have to be part of this husband-sharing madness.”

“You really think they’ll let that happen?” Jane asks incredulously. “You of all people should know that men who don’t meet their quotas are already being assigned concubines in many regions.”

“Assigned?” Wanda asks in alarm.

“They take whoever doesn’t get purchased, the women who are undesirable for whatever reason, and show up with them at your house.” Jane says. “I heard about it from my friend who works for the BAA where I used to live. If you do the auction, you can control who you are bringing into your house. If you get assigned, you get whoever is left. They may be drug addicts, or a bit unstable, unhealthy, unattractive, or maybe even a criminal. I’ve heard rumors that non-violent women in minimum security prison are being auctioned already in some areas.”

“That’s unacceptable.” One of the women says. “The government doesn’t get to tell me that I have to take strangers into my home.”

“The Better American Act says they can.” Lorraine says. “Isn’t that right, Cheryl?”

“Yes.” Cheryl says quietly, her previous smile having melted into misery.

“What?” The oldest woman asks.

“She says yes.” Edna yells.

“Indecent.” The woman says, shaking her head in disgust. “I thought this was America.”

“This is what people voted for, apparently.” Jane says.

“We could all boycott the auction.” One of the previously silent women says. “If they try to drop anyone off at your house, keep the doors locked. They are hardly going to break down the door to bring them inside.”

“You’d let girls die in the cold, or starve, rather than let them inside?” Lorraine asks. “That is not very Christ-like behavior. We are supposed to be kind to one another.”

“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?” Another woman recites, before looking up at Lorraine. “Tom must have said something to my husband. His sermon tomorrow night is based around that verse.”

“You are all very focused on the downsides of this.” Jane says. “With the exception of one girl who is no longer with us, I’m happy to have all of them. They cook, and clean, some of them are even working again already, which has allowed me not to find a job after I lost mine before we moved. I don’t lift a finger around the house anymore, and I haven’t had a headache in the evening in a month.”

“You actually let the girls touch your husband?” The woman who suggested the boycott asks incredulously. “They could have diseases.”

“They all get tested and screened before the auction.” Jane says. “I’m sure Tom had the same thing done with the local girls.”

“It’s so disgusting.” Wanda says. “Letting your husband sleep with other women, and then letting him back into your bed.”

“You could always stay out of his bed.” Jane suggests. “Just delegate that whole business to the girls. If you pick the right ones, your husband might be fine with it.”

“Maybe your husband would be fine with that.” Cheryl says. “I’ve seen the way he looks at your girls. But my husband is loyal to me.”

“Of course Robert looks at the girls.” Jane says, smiling wickedly. “I picked them specifically for him. Why wouldn’t I want my hubby to be as happy as possible?”

“It feels ... wrong.” Edna cuts in. “Sinful.”

“The Old Testament is full of examples of concubinage.” The pastor’s wife says. “Abraham had several that we know of, and King Solomon had over three hundred, along with over seven hundred wives.”

“But we don’t do that anymore.” Wanda says. “And we haven’t for thousands of years.”

“Well, not openly.” Jane says. “Plenty of men have been keeping Mistresses during that time. This way it’s out in the open, and you are in charge. Pick women that you can get along with, and that don’t threaten your relationship with your husbands. It can work.”

“It didn’t always work in the bible even.” Wanda says. “Wasn’t there trouble between Abraham’s wife and concubine?”
