James was quiet during the ride to the station and took me straight to my father’s office.
After seeing me in, James left at my father’s nod. I presented myself to my father. Then he introduced me to his two visitors, Major John Carmichael and his aide, Lieutenant Warren Rogers.
After the brief pleasantries, the Major said, “Constable Mc Gee, are you aware of the contents of the crates that were in the lorry?”
“No, Sir. The warehouses are on my beat, but I have never entered the properties before last night. My brief inspection of the crates was superficial as my vids would have shown.”
“Did you turn the camcorder off at any time?” he asked me.
“No, Sir. I was at an active crime scene,” I promptly answered him.
“It went dark for a while when you went into the warehouse,” he told me.
I frowned, “Possibly, I don’t see what it is recorded. The light on my hat isn’t very big, and the power was off. It should show the wall when I was looking for the switch with my torch and me operating it. When the lights didn’t come on, I walked back to the lorry and inspected the tires that I had shot out.”
“It was moving when you shot out the back ones,” the Lieutenant stated.
I shrugged, “Not very fast.”
“But that side of the lorry was dark,” he commented.
“Yes, but I had enough back-light from the lights of the building behind me. The reflection on the ground from the headlights showed the front tyre. It wasn’t hard to guess where the other tyres were. When I judged where the rim was, I aimed slightly in front of it. They were not hard shots from a prone position.”
“You had just been shot at several times, and you were injured. Yet, you took out the tires of a moving vehicle, and then one of the assailants, who I believe was running and then the driver. What military training have you received?” the Major shot at me.
I started, wondering where this was going. “None, officially that is. Vinay Allan is an Animal Control Officer. Dad and I have been out shooting and hunting with him since I was about eleven. They taught me basic survival and bush skills. I think Vinay has some military experience, if that counts.”
“He was a sniper. That’s why he is good at his current job,” Dad told them. He touched the side of his ear, and the Major’s eyes widened.
I chuckled, and then the men grinned when I said, “No wonder my instructor at the recruitment course said I shot like a sniper.”
Sobering, the Major then asked me, “Do you know who the third man you shot was?”
“Not a clue. The accent was very faint, and I couldn’t place it at first. It didn’t match his appearance either. He was well educated, so if I had to guess, I’d say in America and in a northern school. The Glock is also still used over there, even though it’s an antique these days.”
“It was only after I shot him that I realised he must have had military training to sneak up on me like he did. He’d hidden from me using the shadows and had hugged the ground. I believed that he would have killed me, except he decided that I might be useful as a hostage to help him escape.”
“He would have killed you,” the Major said. “He didn’t normally take hostages. I could see why keeping you would have been an advantage. Did he know who you were?”
“Yes,” I replied without hesitation.
My dad sat forward with a start, “How the hell do you know that?”
“He asked me where my partner was and why I was there alone. It was as much how he asked me. We were not supposed to be there. Barney had called in sick, and if it weren’t for the eclipse, you would have had Rick keep me in town.”
“I was earlier than normal because the watches went home earlier since they couldn’t have a bonfire, and it was a cool night. If I had been five minutes later, I would have missed them. They were shutting up shop. The first assailant was walking towards the gate to open it when I stopped. It was just looped to look shut.”
“How old are you?” the Major asked me.
“I’ll be twenty tomorrow. I joined up as soon as I was eighteen,” I added.
Then I rattled off the courses I had already completed and then added the two I was currently working through to get my degree.
The Lieutenant whistled, to the Major’s disapproval. The Major looked at me thoughtfully and then at my dad, “She is wasted here.”
Dad shrugged, “She wanted to be a cop. She didn’t wish to join UNSEC or the military.”
“A detective,” I qualified.
“You can do that in the military,” the Major answered.
“Nah, you guys have too many rules and grey areas,” I said.
“Danial, as far as I am concerned, the matter is closed with regard to your daughter’s involvement. We will, however, be taking Mr Barney Jindal with us. I believe he was more involved than even Dusty suspects he is. I will clear it through the channels.”
He turned to me and said with a quirky grin, “I heard a little rumour that a major child prostitution ring was recently busted in Cairns. Some very prominent people are now in jail, and they say the evidence was irrefutable.”
