When I noticed that SmokinDriver had started submitting chapters of a sequel to “Nick, High School”, after a hiatus of seven years, I decided to reread “High School before starting on “Nick Book 2”. SmokinDriver’s stories have received uniformly high scores.

Almost every story on SOL requires at least some suspension of belief, and this one is no different. Be prepared for some history to be rewritten. We have here the coming of age of a preternaturally mature teenager, but SmokinDriver goes to great lengths to set up Nick Duke’s life and family to provide a realistic back story for his maturity, confidence and abilities.

The plot is straightforward for the first three-quarters of the story, before veering off to an unlikely scenario. However unlikely that set-up, the story continues to play out naturally. The characters are believable and the situations encountered are, for the most part, normal. I could picture myself or my children being in the same situations and acting the same way at Nick’s age.

The story moves along well, right to the end, and the sex scenes fit into the main story. I’m looking forward to the continuation. The first three chapters of “Book 2” maintain the same feel as “High School.”

My main criticisms of “Nick, High School” are technical. First, SmokinDriver didn’t do the necessary background research in a few areas. As the father of two competitive swimmers, I was bothered by the errors made with regard to the events swum and the time devoted to practice. I also found the last quarter of the story to lack believability with respect to Nick’s and others’ security and personal freedom.

My second criticism has do with typos, and errors of grammar and punctuation. While not frequent or egregious enough to cause me to put the story down, the errors were off-putting and disturbed the flow of the story. I hope SmokinDriver has found a good line editor for “Book 2.”

Overall, “Nick, High School” was an enjoyable read and one that makes me eager to read “Book 2.”

I found a lot of similarities in Nick and Hindsight.

This is NOT a Do-Over.

The power and privilege of the well-to-do are somewhat overblown.

The two month education in the real world with Nick and his Mom was something dreams are made of and the incest freaks out there are probably pissed that it didn't farther.

The knowledge he learned was used well.

The photography is consistent with other writings. (I think SmokinDriver" is photographer, himself.)

The story started to go south with the invention of the stock program.

The story really started to go to "silly" when he and his friend called in Bill Gates and they invented MS Dos. Get real.

Then it went from silly to stupid with the introduction of the CIA and his becoming an agent at the age of 16. I'm Duke, Nick Duke. That is the part that should be cut.

The sexual exploits are a little out there but the knowledge given him on his 2 month crash course makes it believable.

If you want a fun read this would meet that criteria. If you want a FICTIONAL story of rich and privileged, this is it for you.

You'll probably like it. I'm not saying anything about plot because I just fricken hate spoilers.
