An unusual concept that I have never come across before (has it been tried in real life?). Take orphans, give them a new life, a safe haven to grow up in & train them to become(very efficient)soldiers.
This offering gives a hint of what is to come later on and kept me intrigued.
It is a pity that when a series, is as good as this one is turning out to be (#3 is just being released to the wild), that a link can not be made to the other stories to say check number one, or have it flow through to the later ones.

The start of a new series from a writer whose work I've enjoyed over the years and a fine start it is too.
It is military based and even though it is set on an imaginary world the parallels to assorted conflicts (and responses) of the recent past are very clear. A lot of thought has gone into it and a map is available to give you the basic geography of the world. Whilst only a prologue, there is enough hard action and inter action between characters to be interesting in it's own right.
As with "The millionaire next door" and "Hunter" (to name but two) Lazlo is quite happy to nail his colours to the mast and take you along for the ride. Whether or not you agree with his world view, his stories are never less than readable and thoughtful. It also has another hallmark of his stories in that has been well proof read and edited by TeNderLoin whose name is affixed to many of the better written stories on this site.
I'm looking forward to the next stories in this series to see how they build on this interesting start.
