A cool and fun new story that's in progress, "Saving One Another" is the story of Garrett, or Gary as he likes to be called, and the very young neighbourhood hottie who is capturing his heart, no matter how reluctant he is to give it up.
Gary has just gotten back from being shot down while in Afghanistan, during take off. Held captive for a short time, and with a body that's busted by the plane crash - he gets rescued. That's just the start of his trouble though.
He comes back to "civilization" to find his wife withdrawing from him and a bitter divorce in his future - and he still has no clue why. He loves her, and his daughter, but he gets his heart broken and betrayed.
Gary ends up back home, in Idaho, where his family is from - and moves to a neighbourhood that is poor, but seems to be okay, full of people just getting by... except for one. Rudy the redneck sonofabitch next door, a guy who drinks too much and beats his wife - a true asshole.
While trying to hold his long-distance connection with his daughter, and move on from a life that has kicked him in the pants in many, many ways, and during a time that he is going through PTSD and depression, and suicidal thoughts, Gary becomes best friends to a beautiful, smart, too young for him girl.
Shiloh is the unfortunate step-daughter of Rudy the asshole next door. She's 16 and living in a war herself, and Gary becomes her rock as she becomes his anchor.
It has some technical flaws in grammar, but easily overlooked. The "stroke" in this story is delayed as the story progresses and Shiloh ages, but when it arrives it's definitely there.
The story that comes out of this is one that is romantic and sweet and is more than worth your time to read it.
