Shrink42 has posted 18 stories on this site, sadly nothing more recent than 2012. They all score highly. His ‘Transformations’ series is quite remarkable for its detailed descriptions and explanations, which some of you may find a little long winded. I’d recommend that you persevere, because it’s good stuff.
“Breaking Point: Rick” is the story of a young man who grows up in a family of cheerleader man-haters. Every male in the family has gotten out just as soon as he can, Rick is no exception. Apart from his high school counselor, he’s never met a woman who cared what happened to him. Gaining a college scholarship of which his relatives are utterly ignorant, he leads a lonely existence away from home. Towards the end of his second year, he is befriended by an older fellow student, a widow with two daughters. Despite his deep suspicion of all women, he learns to respect Naomi as they work together on a project. She recognises that he’s been badly hurt by a woman, and gains his confidence. With her help, he comes out of his shell, even beginning the process of rescuing one of his hated cheerleader cousins from her ‘Women’s Studies’ induced ignorance. It’s an optimistic and happy ending.
Why do I like it so much? Well, it’s deftly and economically written, giving a lot of back-story in few words. The characters are well-defined and likeable, there’s a subtle vein of humour and cheerfulness throughout, and spelling, punctuation and grammar are excellent. Mostly descriptive, the dialogue is believable and appropriate. The sex is detailed but not over-done. Best of all, there’s a moral to the story. What Shrink42 calls the ‘glamor clique’ and their disdain for anyone not in their class, and how often they lead fucked up and dead-end lives themselves, like his cousin putting out at frat parties because she needs the status. Shrink42 shows that it’s more than okay to be normal, to be a nice guy. I think this is a great story, deserving of more readers, and I hope you will agree.
