TechnicDragon, I must apologize to you; I recall reading parts of this story when it was originally being posted, then I finally read the whole thing a few years after, and only now did I reread it and write a review. How nobody else has reviewed this story or any other in the series is a mystery given how long it's been on the site!
"New Magus" is a sex story. There's no beating about the bush on this one: it's a core aspect of the plot as well as being the plot. Little else happens in this story besides sex, and yet it's still a quite compelling read. The main character seems deeply flawed, with a strange background that is slowly and only partially revealed over the course of the entire story--and I expect more details will be forthcoming in the sequels which I have not yet read. The plot emerges in a thoughtful manner, not rushed in any way by the focus on sex-centric plot devices, and it's actually several chapters before anything of note happens. TechnicDragon is quite successful in teasing the reader up to this point, building up the tension and the sense of confusion in the audience to mirror that of the main character. I would say that it may even take prospective readers a few chapters to get acclimated to the characters and story since the opening is so unique in how it is executed.
As mentioned previously, lots of sex is present. Not to the painful degree of something like Six Times A Day, but the story clearly revolves around it, and the characters interact in ways which primarily lead to some form of intercourse. The author is proficient in writing these scenes, and I can't complain about their length. The characters have good chemistry and reading about them together was enjoyable. The biggest positive here, for me, was the consistent use of longer buildup periods for the sex scenes--namely that the main character was being teased about the promise of sex along with the reader--which avoided having the story feel like it was plodding along from one fucking to the next.
Technically this story could probably use a once-over from an editor to work out some random typos and niggles. Not a big deal and I'm only mentioning it for completeness.
I can't think of any real complaints about the story, plot-wise, other than to say that the setting seems a bit irrelevant in this segment. The story is focused so heavily on the characters and their interactions that the setting fades away entirely, and this seems fair since it isn't featured in any part of the plot.
This is a worthwhile story to read for the sex scenes alone, as they're quite steamy, but the characters are also sufficiently deep so as to engage a reader and keep the pages turning quickly. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in future installments and posting further reviews!
