It’s been some years since rache left us. Sniff… Ten years ago, there was a thing called the SOL Showdown (which was based on an older asstr writing duel called Write Club from 2000 - thanks Denny W. for the info). Two authors were given a title and three hours to write something, which was then judged by a panel of three other authors. Everything was double blind, and the first one had rache going against Punky Girl. I had the privilege of joining Andrew Wiggin and Serena Jones on the panel.
Setting aside the feat of producing this little gem in such a short time, rache’s skill in crafting situations and characters was always remarkable. Here, we’re introduced to capable Secret Service agent Candice at a time when she faces a challenging decision in her life. rache paints a tight picture of the situation with just the right amount of action, dialogue, and things left unsaid. It doesn’t take long to feel for her predicament. After reading this short story again after ten years, it still holds up as a fine example of the genre. Worth a read!
