Reviewed:
This story is very, very clever. The plot is lovely, the main characters are well shaped, the secondary ones a bit sparse. There are a number of clever constructs in the way it is written, but each of these is used to build the story rather than to simply show the inventiveness of the author.
The story is short enough to be read at one sitting, and meaty enough to be very satisfying. I hope it leads to a series based on the many hooks which "Uncle Jim" has placed throughout the story.
Unfortunately there are quite a few spelling errors, many of which are homonyms which have escaped the spell checker. These are distracting at the very least, and people who are not immersed in the plot might even give up reading if they are sufficiently irritated.
Luckily (for me) the story ticked a number of my hot points, so despite the errors I kept reading and was drawn further and further in.
I am not a fan of underage sex, but this was actually not the main theme of the story. The sex in fact was minimal - serving only to advance the story line.
The characterisations of the military people were sensitively done - there are idiots in the military and there are very good people and there are people of every shade in between. "Uncle Jim" makes it clear that he has met every shade and described the situations well. There was only one place where a comment did not seem to fit the individual, and it slipped past easily enough.
Having said those apparent negatives, the story gripped me and held me, and in the end thrilled me. I recommend it highly.
I would recommend that "Uncle Jim" work with an editor in future. I'll still read his stories if he doesn't, but an editor should reduce the error rate.
