There's not a lot to say about this story that Teloz didn't already say perfectly, so I'll try to just fill in the important points:
* Impressively lifelike characters, many of whom are extremely funny.
** Especially the fathers.
* Possibly one of the most accurately-written and hilarious LSD experiences I've ever read about.
This is a great read, if you can read it.

When I start by telling you this is a really good story, which it is, you just know it's going to go downhill from here.
Time and again on SOL we see authors who are real story tellers, but don't bother to learn to use their tools properly, and so it is with 'Halcyon'. Making the story difficult to read detracts from the tale, and makes the reader work to follow it. Jumbling up the dialogue with the exposition is a sure way to do it.
Just following simple rules, like a new paragraph for each protagonist in the dialogue, makes it so much easier to follow. Knowing the difference between 'to', 'two', and 'too', also helps. Anyone know the difference between 'adverse' and 'averse'? (If all else fails, try a dictionary.)
There never will be a perfect manuscript, which is why I never score more than nine for any story, not even those where I've failed to spot an error. The moment a story is published, the first thing you see when you log on is a typo, I know this for a fact! On the other hand, unfinished sentences, and misspelled words are just carelessness. I would have scored this story nine or ten for 'Appeal to Reviewer' if it hadn't been for the technical errors.
Having said all that, New Friends is a good example of the 'coming of age' genre. 'Halcyon' has worked hard to make his characters believable, and it's a new twist on an old plot, so it really is a good story! The fact that there's plenty of sex is a help too, though thankfully it's tastefully written, with a gratifying lack of monster cocks.
If you can work around the technical problems, this story is well worth reading. Read it and enjoy!
