This is a hard to classify story. Mostly, it is a romance; but it has action-thriller aspects, and a coming-of-age story line with even more romance thrown in. It works, though... mainly because it is populated with such good characters, even if they seem a little too likable at times.
Those looking for stroke will be truly disappointed by this story. Those looking for something else, but most especially romance, should find it much more to their tastes. Just keep the insulin handy, as this story is beyond anything I remember Frank Downey writing.
