Reviewed:
As the latest entry in a series I enjoy very much, I decided to review this story. That said, this isn't one of my favorites in the series (or, more properly, universe).
On its own merit, it's an interesting story... although technical deficiencies are somewhat more present than I've noticed in other stories. Perhaps it's faulty memory on my part that leads me to believe that, though.
As with the other stories in the Swarm Cycle, it's rich in possibilities, even though most have been used elsewhere. My biggest complaint would be that - after the CAP testing had been, for so long in the series left to the reader's imagination, for example, it is given definition which may not (and certainly in my mind did not) conform to that imagined - the contradictions to other stories' contents, and preconceptions of readers' imaginations, were somewhat disappointing.
Still, it's worth reading for anyone who likes good MilSF. And who can tolerate the in-jokes and word play.
