The Magnificent Mysterians is definitely not your 'run-of-the-mill' Naked in School story. Superficially, it's just a bit different, but in reality, 'DrBill' paints a pretty dark picture of the psychological effects of 'the program' on particular participants. The two main protagonists are nothing like the extrovert, fun loving, sexual beings portrayed in the normal NiS story.
That isn't to say that The Magnificent Mysterians is bad, anything but, but it is a much different reading experience. Technically, it isn't too bad, re-reading and pondering over what the author really meant, is kept to a minimum. The characters are believable, and it's easy for the reader to empathize with them, even as you see them descending into a very dark place. The plot is certainly original, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested as our intrepid anti-heroes suffer through the week.
After reading all that, I'll bet you're expecting me to say that the story isn't worth reading, but nothing could be further from the truth! The Magnificent Mysterians is a really good story, well written, and well worth the time taken to read it. What it does say, is that for every action there is an opposite reaction, and where some kids in the fictitious 'program' would think all their birthdays had come at once, others may be driven to different places.
Read this story, I thoroughly recommend it, but don't expect to feel elated when you've finished, it will definitely make you think.
Read and enjoy!
