Reviewed:
This story currently carries a rating of 8.8.8
That rating illustrates more about some of the readers here than it does about the story.
The story is a hard read. It is depressing in many places, and downright ugly in others. That is not to say that it is a bad story: not at all.
It is a damn good story and one that will make the reader think about things: what s/he is thinking, what his/her attitude to certain things really is, what life is dealing up to both him/herself and to others, most importantly, WHY these are as they are.
To my mind, that cannot be an 8.8.8
For an author to accomplish his/her goal of getting the reader to think requires hard graft: that's technical quality of a high level. To get the reader to carry on through the hard parts requires a plot of high order.
But to say that the story actually appeals at the end of the gut-wrenching session of reading is simply not believable, unless one takes the denouement at totally face value, which is simply fairyland - suspension of disbelief at the highest level. I don't think any reader that follows the plot to this stage actually thinks that way. Instead we have thought our way through the issues presented, and we congratulate Coaster for a well crafted piece. But enjoyed it: I don't think so.
So not 8.8.8, instead 8 or 9. 9 or 10. Finally 7 at best. And stroke amount: don't even think it. :-)
