While we are given to know this will be a suspense story right from the start of the first chapter, author Scotland-the-Brave manages to seemingly veer right off into the standard sibling incest plot in this tale's second chapter. A lesser author wouldn't have been able to pull off such a segue, but in Bird Song Scotland-the-Brave not only pulls it off he does so without missing a single beat! Multiple track stories are dangerous for writers, because a reader can lose interest in one track or the other and walk away from a story, not so here!

Bird Song follows fifteen year old James MacLaren and his sibling lover Laura aged fourteen as they struggle to cope with the aftermath of a terrorist action that devastates the United Kingdom and much of the world. It also follows the actions of the terrorist cells left behind to seize control of the battered and bruised country by way of forced indoctrination of those children who survived their attacks earlier. The MacLarens manage through luck, pluckiness, clever use of technology and Scotland's rich history to fight back against those who would control her and her people.

There are quite a few plot twists in this story that make it a thrilling ride, some international political power plays that will leave you stunned, but above all it is a story of one boy's coming of age as he finds within him the strength needed to show that while battered and bruised she may be, Scotland is not yet dead!

Bearing in mind that there is a coming of age at the heart of the story, it is worth reminding potential readers that in this story opinions change over time, just as they would in real life as the boy becomes a man. Considering this perspective shift it is impossible to say what the author's politics are, since he so successfully shows both sides of things as the story progresses. The best advice I can give an interested reader is to remember the story is set in Scotland primarily and any politics are from a Scottish perspective.

In any case this is well worth the read, just bear in mind this is a novel with sex in it, not a sex novel. If you're looking for a stroke piece you'll be disappointed. If looking for a great read with a nice splash of sex, then this is the story you're looking for!

This particular story was, while not terribly original in premise, rather original in execution. The amount of technical flaws were around the average mark, although a few were glaring.

Non-UK readers will likely find several of the idioms used a distraction, and the use of non-fictional characters (particularly as this was uncoded) rendered suspension of disbelief somewhat more difficult. Even so, once one gets past that, the story is well put together and is quite interesting.

For those who like the post-apocalyptic genre, don't mind poor editing, and either agree with the author's political views or are willing to ignore them, this is a story I'd definitely recommend.
