Reviewed:
The author of Backscatter took a long hiatus after 2008, posting only one story after that and that was two years ago. More the shame as there was a hint of more to come at the end of this story, something that never happened.
Backscatter is a good story. It's kind of funny how the plot develops. But as the description says, its a futuristic story and the author also said that he didn't want to give too much away so I'll honor that wish by not putting any spoilers in this review.
What I can say is the three things that I took away from it. First, it may help if you have a knowledge of physics. Maybe more than a little. Some areas that hammingbyrd7 wanders into just plain left me in the dust. But fortunately it doesn't really detract from the story all that much.
Next, get ready for a lot of gender roll reversal. For both genders. Maybe more than can be reasonably expected from societal changes over the short time available between present day and start of the story. But I can allow much for artistic license in this. So no downgrades because of it
Finally, the author has a real talent for creating powerful erotic images. Seldom has oral sex been so graphically and softly presented as I've seen here. It was real art.
Technically, the story the tops. There may be one or two misspellings but they weren't egregious. Same for all my usual squicks, i.e. homonyms, punctuation, homophones, etc. High marks here.
I'm sorry hammingbyrd7 didn't post the hinted at sequel. I'm even sorrier that he has apparently stopped posting here.
I rate it slightly higher than its current rating. I think that if you like science fiction, you'll like this one.
