"Michelle's Last Spanking" is less a story about spanking, than it is a confession the paradox of physical and emotional abuse. Spanking is just the vehicle used to deliver the intense emotional drama that unfolds in this short story.
The narrator is an 18 year old girl who recounts for us her thoughts as she's unfairly punished by her parents. The young woman's desperation to be loved is made abundantly clear as repeatedly explains to us how unnecessary is for her parents to "force" her into submission. She wants to submit and would do so eagerly if given the opportunity. If pain is the form her parents' love must take, she'll accept it. Unfortunately they're not offering her love in any form and her realization of that is a turning point in the girl's life.
The narrative describes a certain naivety and fosters in our minds the image of a child, someone much younger, but clearly no less vulnerable, than she is. At times descriptions seem almost clinical, detached in a way, and it serves to reinforce the point that the girl is seeking escape, separating herself emotional from the abuse.
After the initial scenes, and the punishment itself, the story moves forward in time and we get a glimpse of that girl and what her future holds. This is interesting and a nice way to round the story out, but the real punch for me is the first portion and that's where the writing is at its best. The second portion is interesting as contrast, but lacks the same emotional intensity I read earlier. And so in that way the story wavers. I think one more big peak towards the end would have justified the narrative style, and her own observations as the story concludes.
Technically the writing is excellent. The story is told in a simple narrative and very tight, the way I like it. Not a lot of words wasted here, it rarely wanders from the chosen path, and it is proofed well and easily read.
Overall this is a bold and well-written story that requires an emotional investment from the reader. It's meant to spark some anger, some frustration, and a lot of sympathy, and in this respect it succeeds admirably. As erotica, there are certainly elements that will appeal to select few of us; others will not see it at all. In either case, it is certainly worth reading and I recommend it highly.
