Warning: As the codes indicate, this is a torture/snuff story.
Remember how in Superman II, Superman gave up his powers? Some people perhaps found it sweet, kind of like a cop quitting his job to get married or something. Personally, I think it makes him a selfish jerk. What about all those people he could be saving? Still, ignoring the mass chaos resulting from not having a superhero (and the resultant guilt), the biggest punishment he receives is being bullied by a restaurant customer.
The Girl Who Fell to Earth contains a superheroine who, like Superman, gives up (most of) her powers. Her relaxing flight is interrupted by a rifle, and it only goes downhill from there. Soon, she is being brutally tortured, but her immortality precludes her from being killed. The gods are perfectly willing to return her powers (and the associated responsibilities), and she is warned that she'll die if she refuses to accept them, but she does so nonetheless.
The bulk of this story is made up of a superheroine being tortured. Unlike the voting readers, I consider this to be one of Torrent's best stories (the other being The Visitation). As with all of Torrent's stories, the votes are rather meaningless. It seems likely to me that many readers penalize Torrent for writing a torture/snuff story, despite the fact that it is coded as such. This is not a weak torture snuff with cheap wooden paddles and ladies begging for mercy. No, this stuff is much harsher.
I consider Torrent to be the author of choice for when the urge to read something truly twisted, but will point out that this story's appeal is rather limitted.
