In the near future there were terrible wars on earth that left the planet uninhabitable. The remainder of the population now lives on a series of space stations in Earth orbit. Garth is the pilot of a shuttlecraft that is basically a school bus. He is in the process of returning seven kids to their home space station after a field trip when the bus breaks down. Naturally, he doesn’t just pull over to the side of the road. The breakdown leaves him with very little control and no communications, so he can’t call for help.
He docks the bus on an old uninhabited space station that is obsolete and now relegated to a orbiting junk heap. Pretty soon another ship hooks up with the space station. That ship belongs to Red, a woman who makes a living as a scrapper, salvaging and selling space junk.
Together, Garth and Red discover a plot to destroy all of the orbiting space stations, killing the entire population. With the help of the kids and an artificial intelligence, the plot is foiled.
I think this story would make a pretty good movie, and it doesn’t even need an R rating. The kids, generally around 13 and 14 years old, are all extremely smart and computer savvy as you might expect. This is a great story if you are into science fiction at all.
As far as technical, I’m only giving this story a five because there are numerous mistakes that should be caught by an editor. There is horrible misuse of apostrophes, incorrect homophones (past/passed...your/you’re), etc. Plot and appeal both get a 10 however.
