For a story that deals with unnatural compulsion, I guess it is ironic that I feel compelled to write a review after only two chapters (plus a Prolog.)
There's obviously no way I can review the actual story since it has not even really got underway at the moment but I must say that the premise is one that has the potential to grow into an excellent tale.
The quality of the writing is first rate, a lovely smoothness of phrase that made reading it a pleasure. The descriptive passages are very cleverly constructed to give the reader information without the feel of an inventory.
As for the story? well, the synopsis covers what I have read thus far so I won't re-hash that. Suffice to say however, that I found the actual crime being committed to the poor women at the start to be an absolutely horrific one. I will have to read more, if only to see if that horror can be worked through to a conclusion.
I recommend this one, it has the feel already of a significant piece of fiction.
PS. (up to chapt 11)
As I had fervently hoped, the continuation has maintained very high quality. I really hope the plot continues to grow as it has so far...
PPS.
Chapter 18 and this is turning into one of the top stories on the entire site. I am loving the interaction of characters and the brilliantly underplayed narrative style. It's drifting confidently into a Chandleresque 'film noir' with a similar height of quality to those other detective thrillers by Winemaker.
BTW. I am happy to report a levelling off of the horror aspect (as hoped for above) but the baddies are certainly popping up with nasty regularity :)
OK!!!
So, this review has been a bit like a blog for me -- lol.
The story was finally finished today and I have to say, it progressed very, very well to its conclusion.
My original excitement was well founded and I heartily endorse it as an excellent read.
Thanks Bysshe, good on yah!
