I try not to review stories that have previously been reviewed, but I feel pretty strongly about this one, and I’d also like to say a few things about the author.
“Rod O’Steele” has posted nearly 100 stories to SoL, but nothing new for about 5 years. I have seen more recent works under that name on Amazon, so I think he’s moved on and is getting paid! I highly recommend his stories; I have read and liked most of them. In many of his stories Mr. O’Steele has stated opinions on Western sexual and social mores, and I tend to agree with many of his views. As for relationships with young women, a friend of mine once stated "the older one gets, the broader one’s horizons are with respect to females". In other words, we can appreciate women our own age, and yet the youngsters still look good.
Mike and his wife Cyndi have fostered 50 or so kids over the years. Mike gets a call from friend and social worker Deanne who needs them to foster a girl who just lost her whole family to a car accident. He has to tell her Cyndi left him for someone else, and it might not be appropriate for a single man to take in a girl. Deanne is in a bind, and she convinces Mike to shelter her temporarily until something more fitting comes up.
Mike then meets 16-year-old Caryn, who turns out to be a gorgeous young WOMAN. From the very beginning, the two form a bond. Mike comforts her for her loss, and she realizes she can offer comfort to him for being abandoned by his wife. They soon fall into a nice domestic relationship. After a few weeks, Mike realizes that since Caryn is still there, a more suitable foster home hasn’t materialized. Mike asks Caryn about this and she has to admit she likes staying with him and hasn’t tried to find an alternative. Mike likes her being there too, so he didn’t push it, but he did tell her to be honest about it to Deanne. They are now waiting for the poop to hit the propeller when Deanne finds out. (Apparently Deanne and Social Services left it up to the kid to find her own home…an improbable situation, but vital to the plot.)
Deanne does find out, but her long association with Mike gives her the confidence to allow the situation to continue. Given that this is an SoL story, Mike and Caryn develop feelings for one another beyond a foster dad and daughter relationship; eventually acting on it and fulfilling their greatest desires and hopes. When she finally wakes up to this development Deanne is not amused, but decides to turn a blind eye.
Along the way Mike’s ex, Cyndi rears her ugly head. It seems her boyfriend dumped her and she is trying to get her old life back. Even if he wasn’t involved with Caryn, Mike would have still slammed the door on that for obvious reasons. Some tension and drama ensues, but is soon dealt with.
Many of Rod O’Steele’s stories deal with relationships between people with a large age gap. While adolescent girls are great to look at, a mature man would probably have trouble relating to one. Caryn isn’t a fugitive from Oyster50’s “smart girl” universe, but she’s no slouch. Suddenly losing her family probably made her grow up sooner than normal, but I suspect she was pretty mature for her age already. This aspect is not really discussed here, but you can draw your own conclusions. The bottom line is, I think you will fall in love with Caryn like Mike and I did. This is another story where I wouldn’t mind trading places with the main character. This old romantic reviewer keeps this story in his permanent collection.

I am a sucker for a really excellent love story... And this is it! Mike's wife just ups and leaves him with her boy toy; she becomes totally embittered with her life and tries, tries, to overpower him when her toy runs off with a girl his own age. Mike has for many years fostered youngsters who needed a warm, loving, caring, nurturing, you get it, home environment. So when his case worker calls with a request for help with a young girl who has lost her parents in a vehicular accident, he cannot say anything but yes.
Much to his amazement she turns out to be a beautiful sixteen year old who melts the hate he felt for his departed wife and accepts the responsibility of caring for her . Then the shan hits the fit, and all hell breaks loose and some very quick action needs to be taken to save the day. Sure enough Rod O'Steele is up to his old tricks, thank heavens, and the day is saved. Enjoy, I really like this one and give it the max points.;
