Sometimes I despair about the way that authors can produce so much story, but leave me so cold to whatever is going on in it. Things like teenagers who speak to each other like they are middle-aged or sex scenes that happen after two sentences, one of which is usually "do you want to do it?" drag me out of any story that I would actually like to be immersed in.
This story however, restores my faith in the idea that there is some truly superb writing talent out there.
There is a nicely smooth introduction to the premise of the plot and then it is straight into the action.
Civilization has collapsed, the few remaining survivors of the various ravages are living in a new dark-ages amongst the remnants of our modern infrastructure and our main protagonist, Emil, is out hunting a wild pig. What he eventually catches is going to change his life, for sure.
The dialogue, one of my personal 'hot buttons' is just wonderfully authentic. You can almost imagine the author was using a voice recorder to eavesdrop on real people! and, just to prove that "do you want to do it?" can be used successfully, this story makes use of just that phrase in a way that is totally believable and in a scene that is more lifelike than many I have read.
Now, I am in a bit of a quandary about this review. There have only been four chapters posted so far and so I might be taking a gamble on the quality of the entire story but from what I have read this far, it's a very good gamble. I am really looking forward to many more chapters in this one.
The numerical rating for story plot is a ten, because I feel confident that Nigel Woodman has a well-planned adventure for us!
