Suddenly we are transported through time to a much later time when Tom and his mother are left to take care of Tom's baby daughter who is left motherless when Anne dies in childbirth. Mr. Duncan has charged Tom with guiding the Clan out of the "Dark Ages" into a more vibrant way of life, but he is at a loss as to how he should bring it into this new state. He then realizes how to accomplish this exceedingly complicated solution with the help of his now large family of willing slaves.

I hope this is not the last of the series, but it does seem to be the case alas.
