I applaud Volentrin's attempt at yet another disaster story.
You'll think to yourself, "What hasn't been done before?" But, face it, everyone has the right to tell a story from their own perspective and I just happen to think that Volentrin's approach is a pretty damn good one.
Also, as the story progresses, the writing, plotline, intrigue just gets better and better. And I'll tell you what else I like about it, the characters are "real" enough for me.
Let's face it, when the big one hits, it'll be panic, havoc, confusion, disruption, disorientation, fear, hunger, disease, you name it, it'll be happening.
"Collision Course and After" is handled quite well and it's only an aspect that maybe you and I hadn't thought about.
Volentrin went with what he felt he knew best and it works well.
The story is about two brothers who live in an isolated area of the US. One is a Army Reserve Major, single father and the other is a pilot for an independent company that happens to be able to travel beyond earth's atmosphere.
A 'friendly' government decides to send nukes out to intercept an object that is heading for earth. Well, as you can guess, it doesn't quite work out for the best, In fact, contrary to what everyone else thought would work best, it ends up causing a global disaster.
The focus of this particular story is how the aftermath is handled by this family and the adventures it causes their lives.
It is very well written and being a fan of this particular genre I've had the privilege of "watching" this writer get better as more of the story gets posted. At this point it's up to chapter 18 and it's only getting better.
I gave it an '8' for technical quality only because as much as I like the story and the author's work, it's got some big shoes to fill. Volentrin decided to put himself where authors like Al Steiner and DotB rule. That's a lofty goal but, I'm sure Volentrin is up to the challenge. After all, he wrote this and it's coming along just fine.
It's recommended reading and it won't dissapoint you. Enjoy!
