Please note: Gruinard is already up to Book 17, but this review covers the story from the start. I reviewed the series when it was at Book 4. This is an update and reaches out to those who missed my first review.
Gruinard, a first-time author on SOL, is in the midst of writing an epic. Each book is short, covering no more than a year in the life of the MC. The story is sad, happy, exciting, sexy, but, most of all, never dull. It is filled with plot twists, turns and outcomes that you didn’t expect.
It is a coming-of-age story about a boy who could be a social outcast but his ambition and will won’t let him. The boy is now in university, his experiences are broader and he is more mature. Of course, there is still some element of suspension of belief to this story, but it’s carried off in such a way as to be totally believable if you squint just a bit. The chapter endings manage to leave you wondering and looking forward to the next instalment.
Grammatically, it is now as clean as any I’ve read on SOL. No grammatical errors, very few spelling mistakes and only a few punctuation errors I would quibble about. For the isolationists out there, a warning - it’s written in British English. Not only that, but the MC and many other characters are Scottish, so be prepared to read through the colloquialisms.
The sex scenes are always appropriate to the situation, and short enough to paint the picture fully without getting boring.
Start at the beginning and enjoy the full story. You’ll be glad you did.
