Lubrican has always been an enjoyable author. His stories march from introduction to resolution in a logical progression with just enough plot twists and turns to keep them interesting. Every good story needs a challenge for the characters to meet. Often the challenge in Lubrican’s stories involve the characters themselves overthinking their situation, leading to angst and despair which they somehow must overcome.
If his works have one fault, it’s that sometimes he spends too much time inside his players’ heads, digging much too deeply into their psyches and motivations. Too much omniscient knowledge can be a distraction. Foreshadowing can easily detract from the natural progression of the story being told. We don’t always need detailed thought balloons to justify the players’ sometimes questionable actions.
In this story the author has gloriously avoided going too far in that direction. Yes, he spends time letting his characters analyze their own thoughts and perceptions. But it is done just to the almost perfect point where he avoids doing the analysis for them, and their progression from thought A to thought B seems perfectly natural under the prevailing circumstances.
This is one of the best stories Lubrican has told in quite some time. I heartily recommend it. His “Alpha” version stands proudly on its own merits.
This author normally includes elements of incest in his works, and he’s forewarned that a subsequent version of this will advance that type of relationship. Frankly, I hate to see that happen. Adding and explaining that much more angst may well simply “F” up a story that is almost perfect just like it is!
