This story is number 5 in Jody Daniel's "Angels Universe". I have worked my way through all of Jody's tales, and chose to review this one because I think it's the first one featuring all of the Angels. In short, the Angels are a group of women who look as sweet and nice as they are, but they are also skilled in warfare. We have specialists in unarmed combat, demolition, piloting, and sniping.
"To Cheat the Devil" contains all that and more. You will find betrayal, heroic airborne combat, drama, and tension. The main character is a fighter pilot newly-hired by the organization employing the Angels. He takes part in a mission to help quell terrorists in Somalia. Along the way, he acquires a personal helicopter and a couple of girl friends. Or should that be girlfriends? Read it and see.
Mr. Daniel should be on the payroll of the South African Department of Tourism, given his vivid descriptions of the weather and ambience of his homeland. Even though most of the action takes place in Somalia, he is able to squeeze in a lot of compelling descriptions of South Africa and other locations in that great continent.
The terrorists are sent looking for their 72 virgins, some other bad actors meet their ends, and all the heroes return to their lives in the end. This includes our MC, who finds the love of his life.
For fun, see if you can spot a little reference to Oyster50's "Community" series in this story.
I'm giving high marks, even technical. There are a few goofs, but nothing that detracts from the enjoyment of this tale.
