The central problem with 'Tsunami Mary' by 'Big Ed Magusson' (BE) is that it is too good for its source material. To fully appreciate the story, readers must first be familiar with Fanlon's 'Windy Pines' series, which features the eponymous 'Mary' as an important secondary character. While I think Fanlon is a promising new addition to this site, and the central premise of 'Windy Pines' appeals to me a great deal, I have a hard time recommending that story.

However, I may well be in the minority given the generous score and download figures 'Windy Pines' has garnered on this site. With that in mind, I have little doubt that fans of the series would also very much enjoy reading 'Tsunami Mary'.

In general, I'm a big fan of BE's writing style. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that his writing is among the best material you'll find on SOL, regardless of the personal appeal of his stories. Additionally, BE is also very good at handling pace. Things bump along without ever feeling rushed or grinding on with spurious details and subplots.

The author has a knack for striking a balance between the ridiculous elements inherent to this kind of story and the need to imbue the characters with a sense of relatability and humanity. This is no small achievement. Many stories of this kind end up with a dark or exploitative undercurrent, while others are conceived from the outset as a kind of farce (or turn into one anyway) with characters and events becoming wholly untethered from reality. In my experience, this never happens in BE's work. In 'Tsunami Mary' as well as in most of his other work, BE manages to find the narrow path between these poles.

In conclusion, 'Tsunami Mary' would most appeal to fans of 'The Windy Pines' series, although the quality is so high that others should also give it a try. For those who are not already familiar with BE's work, I would strongly encourage reading his other stories available on SOL.
