This is the second of Charles Jeffries’ SOL “return” posts I’ve read, and the second one I’ve reviewed. Okay, I’ll admit, as a college (and later) broadcaster myself, the title had me hooked. The content didn’t disappoint either.

As I observed earlier, it’s very difficult to score top ratings in a very short story. There just isn’t enough length to fully set the mood, establish the characters backgrounds or motivations, and then develop the plot. Charles does a good job of doing all that here, but he’s still a bit constrained by the word count, and when I hit the closing paragraph, while I had very much enjoyed the story, I realized I would have appreciated just a bit more.

As a former broadcaster, maybe I saw a bit of myself in the character of the protagonist/narrator. (I’m pretty sure that’s a goal of stories told in the first person, even if authors don’t realize it.) And in fairness, he actually wasn’t a broadcaster; his sudden love interest was. But I think I’d have liked to know just a little more about each of the male and female leads.

In a very short story, you have to eliminate most of that, and the author did, a bit to the story’s detriment. Let’s face it, basically this is the tale of two people: they met, they were instantly attracted, they f**ked.

I was never quite that lucky… like most guys, most of my “encounters” took a bit more time and a lot more “wooing.” But a good plot involves physical setups, mood, and motivations, enough so to make the story quite plausible. Mr. Jeffries gives us all that and quite a bit more, but because of the abbreviated length of the composition, it’s basically the “Readers Digest” condensed version. It’s very good, and for the length of the composition, I don’t think it could be much better.

As with his previously reviewed work, Charles has a precise economy of words, which makes every syllable count as a brush stroke to paint this story’s picture. Whether his story is fiction or not, we very well know it could happen, and the setup and buildup make it all seem that much more likely that it did. Yet for most of us guys that don’t practically fall into bed with the beauty they just met, it still seems like a well constructed fairytale.

I think my biggest gripe is that the story ended too soon. Again, following the basic plot of “meet/motivate/mate” it accomplished all those points. But that’s right where the story ended. That’s fine. Yet for me for it to be a true fairytale, it needed just a bit more “happily ever after”…or even just a bit more “after.” I suddenly hit the “author’s notes,” and felt they arrived too soon.
