An absolute "Must Read" story. My usual modus operandi is to not bother with scores and let folks figure it out by reading the review. My only warning would be to have tissues handy.
An excellent look at the times, people and sacrifices of that time and place. There are many other stories just in that one corner of WWII and all should be remembered. I thank the author for giving a very worthy effort to remember these particular heroes.
I felt the need to comment as it hits me personally from a couple directions. First my grandmother was an Army nurse during the war though never on the front lines. Always have I had respect for the nurses. and much more for those who performed in such hellish conditions. Secondly my father-in-law was a Philippine Scout attached to the US Army and a survivor of the Bataan March and subsequent POW. I truly wish I could have met the man, but he died when my wife was 6 years old partially due to health issues sustained at the time.
Many thanks to D.T. Iverson for a wonderful story.
