(Revised Review around Chapter 80)
The great thing about this story is that, despite a few aspects I find flawed (for my personal tastes), I can't stop thinking about the story, which is a big deal in my book. So I wanted to help set expectations so that readers stick it out and give it the attention it deserves. There are very few stories that have made me feel such dread and hopelessness followed by relief, pain and horror followed by humor, love then disgust and humiliation. This story is *dark* so be prepared to feel all the feels.
I do feel that the Sadistic and Tear-Jerker tags are missing on this one because the majority of the sex scenes are sadistic and tear-jerking, directly plot related however, rarely gratuitous. The rest are sweet girl-girl(s) and occasional girl(s)-guy(s) that are really well done, and help explain how these people survive in the situation they find themselves."We found love in a hopeless place" -- truer lyrics never applied to a story. This isn't a stroke story though, unless you are a sadist, which isn't a judgement, just setting expectations.
I did struggle to get into this story at first, it took some persistence to reach the "falling in love with the MC" phase I look for, a few chapters in. The MC in the first few chapters just didn't appeal or connect with me, she was just a presence, a leaf on the wind, with things happening to her with muted responses. Stories as dark as this do tend to have lower scores, but I think that the slow start is really why this story isn't as well received in the voting, given how well written and good it gets once the story really gets established.
The story is a clever mix of realistic behaviors and responses to absurd situations and circumstances. The absurdity does break the immersion on occasion, but is what creates the backdrop for the story to have some of the more powerful scenes and evocative emotional impacts. Maybe widespread classist cannibalism and sexual sadism by the rich would be less absurd in a world like the Hunger Games, though the scandals we see in Weinstein, Diddy, Epstein, Yacht girls, etc. show similar things are part of the dark underbelly of our society to some degree.
If you read it as a serial, one or two chapters a week, I think the volume of hard scenes wouldn't pile up as much as it does if you start from scratch, but be prepared for a bit of repetitive plot action if you do power through a bunch of chapters. The author intentionally weaponizes the repetitive aspects when the MC is being groomed/brainwashed, to somewhat desensitize the reader and create a sort of Stockholm Syndrome scenario, just like the MC experiences. It is really powerful and clever meta-writing IMO.
The world here, like some others on SOL, is apparently STD free, which has the follow-on that sloppy-seconds or sloppy-fifteenths don't have the same turn off to the participants, that I think we see in the real world. While it is true there is a fascination in porn with BBC these days, the use of the Big Black Boogeyman as a major plot device doesn't appeal as well with me. Nearly every male figure in the story is a situational rapist at best, sadistic torturing cannibal at worst. Or wildly complicit to rape (like the "Rose" stylist). There is really only one notable and one less-notable exception up until Chapter 80. It is also exclusively girls being trafficked (and worse), boys are oddly absent from the story. Maybe their meat cuts are ruined by testosterone?
Again, all of this to set expectations, because once you are in it, the story really grabs you and doesn't let go, is technically very well written, and has solid dialogue that drives the story. Be prepared to lose a week. You root for Cassie and the 'family' she creates to survive. And you really will fall in love with the her if you give her the chance.
