Weighing in at 178K words - it's worth a review. This author may pull a "George R.R. Martin" and never finish his series. Which at this stage, I think is what we should call it when that happens after someone creates a very satisfying story but does not complete it.
George's A Game of Thrones is 298,000 words. A Clash of Kings – 326,000 words. A Storm of Swords – 424,000 words. A Feast for Crows – 300,000 words. So in terms of depth - we are a little over halfway to one of the professional novels.
FanFictionMan has written some good stuff, but this is one of his best.
The problem is the Showrunners must have been on too much cocaine for Season Eight or high on their own hype and believed they could schlock anything together and ship it and we'd gobble it up.
I am told it's the 'sunk cost fallacy'. That is where the viewer is so invested in S1-7 they will sit through pretty much anything to see what happens next. If S8 had been released as the first season, I think it would have failed and no one would have ever watched it. The TV series was utter garbage filled with so many inconsistencies and plot holes that you could fly a dragon through them.
I myself wrote a poor man's version of "How I wished GOT had ended". I am not good at that type of fiction and it shows.
FFMan OTOH clearly read the books and emulate and channel's George's storytelling style. This is the ribald tale of Sir Davos, but many other characters are featured. My favorite is Yara of the Iron Isles. I'd love to see a story based strictly on her wild adventures.
As always, his writing is clear, and if there was an error I didn't notice it. The plot is nicely done, but chapters at times are a bit skimpy.
As HBO is set to release the House of Dragons later this year this story may gain attention again (even though it is set in a different time in Westeros). I am sure most fans will be skeptical of the HBO series - but I can recommend this one. You could even disconnect yourself from the rich tapestry of Westeros and forget about the TV series entirely and truly enjoy it.
I would have preferred FFman write the TV series. It's a fun story!
