Reviewed:
First I must acknowledge that I had to be talked into reading, let alone reviewing, this story. In the introduction, the author professes a love for gothic horror. I, on the other hand, hate it, so I was holding my nose when I began reading.
But I did in fact read this quite good story. It's about a young woman who's relationship with her brother causes her a great deal of psychological pain, exacerbated by the actions and inactions of their sociopathic mother and their absent father. Oh, and there is a ghost; I don't want to give anything away, so that's all I'll say.
The story is well-written; the author has a good command of language and uses it to tell a story that draws you in. The plot holds together well, with no obvious holes. The characters are well-constructed, though one is somewhat a caricature.
Technically it's very good, but not perfect; I found a few rough spots.
I find this to be more of a relationship-angst story with a bit of ghost thrown in than it is a horror story. I'm not complaining, mind you; I'd likely not have scored it as high were it more like H.P. Lovecraft. As it stands, I'm quite impressed with this one, and will be seeking out other (hopefully non-horror) stories by this author.
I recommend it.
