I’m a big fan of qhml1; I follow him so I don’t miss out on his latest treat. Here’s one from 2018 that’s well worth a read or a re-read.
Dave Waxman has been married to Beverly Patterson for thirteen years; she’s now the CEO at his work. When she calls him in to her office and summarily fires him, their personal relationship seems certain to follow their professional one down the pan.
The story tells what happens next. It’s well written, full of humor, a little bit of an emotional roller-coaster with an all-too-human hero pushed beyond reason. Thoroughly enjoyable.
I do have one gripe. The point of view alters between Dave and Beverly, which works very well, except where the formatting hides it in a couple of places, but sadly this is blighted and confused by sudden mistaken changes of voice from ‘I’ to ‘she’ or ‘they’. (The worst offender is the sentence ‘I was sitting in her chair’ which stopped me dead until I worked it out, 'I' should be 'She'.)
It seems that the writer posted before finishing making alterations. I’m sure a minor rewrite could solve this, and then without these annoying little bumps it would be a smoother and more satisfying ride. Don’t let it distract you from what is a pretty enjoyable – if slightly unlikely – tale from a great author.
Spoiler alert - BTB-ers won’t like the ending, but, hey, some things are better fixed than discarded.
