Reviewed:
A man and his dog hunt "Wasters" in a time in which global warming and evil have destroyed what, at one point, was the USA.
A short story such as this really does not have time to flesh out a plot. We have very little background provided for the characters, just a brief snippet or two to explain some things. As such, this was more like a newspaper article than a full story. I give it a C (6).
Technical quality is very good on this, and merits an A to an A+ (8-9). Perhaps only the major gaps in plot keep it from being a 10.
For personal appeal, I can only give it an Average C (6). I prefer stories with more character development than this one. Perhaps if the story was expanded to include more answers. What happened to the USNA government and state governments when the effects of global warming hit? Does the USNA now include Canada and Mexico? A more in depth story of the background of the Guardian, and why he was the one chosen for this? Are there more Guardians out there? What kind of die-off was caused by the warming? This story is in part, about the invasion of the US by Russian forces. Did Europe and Russia survive unscathed? Too many questions left unanswered. The plot idea has a lot of potential, but it did not flesh out enough.
