Reviewed:
I discovered this story by accident, and decided to read it on a whim. I am glad I did.
The story has a stronger appeal to me as I got in to it than I thought it would. It starts a bit slow, and the early part seemed longer than I thought it should be. However, much of the early story provides context for later parts of the story.
I wish the story was longer, and had more details about the MCs work and military service. However, it seems the intent of the author is to focus on the MCs desire to live life on his own terms, and appearing to be a "slacker" or Ne'Er Do Well is the focus of the story.
He is smart, and he is willing to focus on doing a task properly, so that he may then relax. Multiple scenes depicted him consistently working in a manner that a job would be completed efficiently and not have to be redone. His boss and his coworkers respected him.
His military service is almost entirely "off screen" but it is believable.
SPOILER ALERT 📢 (Although it is hinted at in the Author's Story Description): the Governor of every state in the USA has considerable discretion to appoint the State National Guard Adjutant General. They are a political appointee, and their responsibilities are within their State. Although they have significant influence upon the commander(s) of units, including a Brigade(s) and/or Division(s), the officers commanding units that might be mobilized, than the State Adjutant General.
I know of at least 2 State Adjutant Generals who were promoted from LTC (Lieutenant Colonel) to Brigadier General. One was a close friend of the Governor, and his "only job" other than weekends with the Guard, was managing a Not For Profit Charity (it was a position of significant responsibility, but not that many hours).
I didn't notice any spelling or grammar errors. I have some issues with some sentence structure, resulting in needing to reread some parts of the story. (That could be My problem, and not the author's.)
Not the best of stories, but it is very good. It is a pleasure to read, and the challenges the character faces make his attitude understandable. So many stories have uber achieving characters. Having a character content to barely scrape by with C's is a pleasant change. Also, the MC learned enough to achieve his goals.
An entertaining and believable story.
I strongly recommend this story!
