This story is a wonderful example of the Law of Unintended Consequences. The unnamed MC worked as an assistant surveyor for 24 years without taking sick time or vacation with an eye towards using the accrued time toward an early retirement. Then "they" enacted a use-it-or-lose-it policy.

Our hero took advantage of all his time and other benefits and ended up being a huge thorn in the side to some folks.

A very satisfying flash tale that I think will make you happy. I really didn't notice any technical problems, and the plot definitely gets 4 stars.
