As a lover of good stories, when I find one, I like to see what else that author has written. That habit led me to the storied written by Jay Cantrell. Many, I was reading for the second time.

I just finished Lifeline, a truly great story. Short recap, it is about a lawyer who through circuitous means, came to know a "notorious" local gangbanger. As the story progresses, Des, the drug dealing murder was charged with murder. He called upon Ben, the only lawyer he trusted to defend him.

The story proceeds with surprising twists and turns and enough great dialogue to rate best seller status on anyone's list. For the rest of the story, you got to read it yourself.

While you are at it, check the rest of his stories, not a dud amongst them. I did not rate on technical as I don't feel qualified to do so.

So I don't have to pay to read a story this good?

Jay Cantrell is one of a small group of superb writers on this site. This is up there with his best. It also has the advantage of not being over long but long enough for the reader to feel invested in the characters and to care about the outcome.

He uses a good proofreader and a good editor. How much they do I don't know but the result is always a good, clean read devoid of major technical issues. Any that do exist (I spotted one) don't matter, the storytelling is that good.

No, I'm not going to precis the plot, just read the story.

I look forward to his next one.

Jay Cantrell is one of the better active authors here at SOL. Starting in 2010, each of his stories have ranked consistently in the high 8s to midrange 9s. And the rankings are well deserved, something that doesn't always happen at SOL.

Lifeline continues JC's exploration of the legal/police genre that he first explored with Death And Life In Emerald Cove. Like that one, this one is fast paced with good characters (some endearing, some not so) wrapped in a great story that is entirely believable and leaves the reader wanting more. At least this reader.

There are some minor proofreading errors but, seriously folks, this IS a free site. And I stress "minor". Only someone anal like myself about spelling and punctuation would likely notice them. But they didn't detract one iota from the story.

I downgraded a little on technical quality due to the minor grammatical errors but still rate this story an overall 10. And here's hoping JC continues to grace SOL with his writing.
