Farmers lives are ruled by the land they work and nature's cycles. James is the son of a farmer who's orphaned by a bushfire. He continues to live with his father's old boss, but knows he has to make his own way in life after school. Life has it's ups and downs, and many challenges for James. He leaves the farm for the Australian Army, but ends up back as a farm worker due to combat wounds. Join James as he meets many challenges and changes in his life.

Although a relatively "short 5 chapter story", the author has put sufficient detail and information in to it so that the reader is caught up in the story. It is a good reflection of a farmer's life in Australia and his rural area. The highs and lows of living that type of life; the dangers that bush fires present and the damage done by "do-gooder greenies" who think that they know better than the people who live with those type of dangers on a daily basis. At the same time, provide a life and living for their families.
The author has given a good account of where people pull together when danger threatens, or a community is in need; be it in the face of a natural disaster, a man made one, or a political one.
This story is a microcosm of a wider life that could be set nearly anywhere in rural Australia.
Well worth the read, and future re-reads.
