SOL search

everyoneenjoy ๐Ÿšซ

I find the category and advanced search on the main site to be very poor.

I have tried many different combo and they tend to just bring up same story results or even come up no stories.

So it is either there is a very small story database or it is only looking at tags.

There are almost 42,700 stories on the site. So it's not a small story database. Maybe no gigantic, but not small.

And yes, absolutely correct, the category/tag search is only looking at tags.

Some tag combos are very popular and they return a lot of results and some aren't as popular and they return very few results. So it really depends on what you're looking for.

The tags list shows you how many stories are tagged per tag:

Is this list linked somewhere or is it a query that you just ran for this reply? The list could be fun/informative to peruse without the need to keep going back and changing search parameters. I took a look around and didn't see anything but I'm sure there are hidden corners I've never explored and that I probably don't even know exist.

You can find out how many stories there are for a particular tag by running a category search with just that tag in it.

https://storiesonline.net/library/categories.php

run with just the tag sports gives a list of 113 stories.

run with just the tag school gives a list of 1,471 stories.

but match it up to run both tags and you get only 34 stories with both tags.

As to the results using the advanced search engine, you're searching in different fields.

A search on sports in the description field gives an answer of 40 stories. However, the 2 lists aren't the same, despite some stories being in both lists.

A search on school in the description field gives an answer of 1,416 stories. However, the 2 lists aren't the same, despite some stories being in both lists.

A search on sports in the description field gives an answer of 40 stories. However, the 2 lists aren't the same, despite some stories being in both lists.

A search on school & sports in the description field gives an answer of 14 stories. However, the 2 lists aren't the same, despite some stories being in both lists.

Keeping all of that in mind, I'm sure it's possible to find a few word combinations where what you get back will be the exact same lists through both search engines due to how the author has tagged the story and written the description.

Also, keep in mind if you search the advanced engine using the story title field or the story text field you'll likely get different results again.

just did a story text field search on school & sports and got 1,072 hits with some stories I didn't see on the earlier lists.

I understand that - that was the reference to "...without the need to keep going back and changing search parameters" part of my post. The fact is that it is kind of cool to just click on the link and see what shows up. Not a big deal but kind of cool.

It looks like the filters are setup to not return inactive stories for these lists and to sort by score. Both completely reasonable defaults.

@tendertouch

A couple of other points to keep in mind is there are other settings that affect what you will see in your search results.

1. Both search engines have fields in the search window where you can exclude things like stories in progress, incomplete and inactive stories, and stories in a series or universe.

2. The My Account settings in Account Info and Preferences for the Access level, and the Exclusion preferences near the bottom of the list where you can set something to apply to all of your searches so what you don't want will not be included in the results.

In the categories search page, in the title grey bar, on the right.

By that I hope you mean to click on the link Show All Tags on the right end of the grey bar at the top of the Search by Category page. as I see no list on the actual search page, but when I clicked on that link I got a page with categories and numbers.

Thanks! I was missing that completely while looking right at it.

Can't you offer a better search as I said it's not very good.

Say I want to find girl, reluct, beastiality i tick those boxes and it comes up with things that are not even to do with that and only 3 pages

For some one who is paying for premium it doesn't feel like it's worth it others that are free offer a search that works.

If you are a premier member you can include tags as well as exclude tags from your search. The one thing a premier member can't do, and Lazeez can't do either, is to magically produce stories in accordance with the tags you want. Someone needs to have written such stories and submitted them to SOL. Otherwise you're out of luck.

Part of that issue is the search tags are defined by the author. That and some tags are newer than others, so it is possible for a story to have been posted and the author to have disappeared before a search tag existed for that item.

Or the author fell on one side of another of the extremes on story tags(or failing to read them), so for example, an author may might tag for "nudism" because they have a character walk around a bedroom naked after having engaged in sex. So they evidently decided it meant "nudity" rather than "nudism" which while one certainly does imply the other, the reverse relationship doesn't reliably exist.

You really think so? He tagged 'girl', 'reluctant', 'bestiality' and is disappointed the search result was only three pages of stories. I'm astonished there are that many stories with that combination of tags.

Three pages doesn't sound out of line. Note that the 'girl' tag shouldn't be showing up on newer stories, at least in relation to sex, as it's for females under 12 years of age, so the possibilities are somewhat limited.

As far as the category search goes I'm not sure what Lazeez could do for you - if the stories aren't written or, probably more to your point, they aren't properly tagged a tag search isn't going to find them.

Maybe we just don't understand what you think should happen when you select those tags. If you could explain that better perhaps we could offer better suggestions? For example, you said that the search comes up with things that don't have to do with your search. Have you read all of the stories to be sure that they don't have to do with your search? Or did you think that it should somehow return stories that deal only with a young girl who is initially not consenting to bestiality but eventually does? Clearing up what you think should be happening would help us to understand.

LOL, missed that one. Good catch, and in that light, getting more than a few hits is amazing in an indeterminate way.

We have quite a few 'Grandfathered' stories on the site (something I frequently forget), so a large number of hits shouldn't be that amazing.

True, so far as it goes, but the combination doesn't look likely to return many. 'girl' + 'reluctant' only returns 185 and bestiality is enough of a kink that it makes sense that it would pare it way, way down.

I'm still hoping the OP will give us some more insight into what sort of search he's thinking of.

Sounds to me that he was new to the search features and did not know how to use them. God only knows what he was looking for, and I would have expected him to have responded by this point.
