Is there a way to block a reader?

tangoperu ๐Ÿšซ

That's the question. If somebody is going to call me names just because he doesn't like a story I wrote, a story I didn't tell him to read it, I'd rather block him.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@tangoperu

Yes, you can block private comments/messages: Click the 'Block' link.

In the comments section you can also block them using the 'โ›”๏ธ ๐Ÿšซ' buttons.

The one on the left blocks that reader from commenting on the current story, the one on the right blocks the reader from commenting on any of your stories.

Thank you.

Ah, but is there a way to block them from *reading?* Can I find the mook who's 1-bombing reviews and prevent them from ever seeing my content again? (I know readers have a "block author", do authors have a "block wanker" feature?)

I don't think that would be in Lazeez's best interest to do that.

Not only that, but it's pointless. The site allows reading without log in (3 stories per 24 hours) and it's easy to just create a new account.

Playing Devil's Advocate, couldn't the author make life harder for the mook by making their stories Premier-only?

98% are free users, so it would most likely work. But then the author would be blocking the vast majority of readers and their read counts would plummet. Not sure that's worth the price.

Apologies, I shouldn't have cast that as a serious question. But thank you for the serious answer.

Good point and worthy of the Morgan Freeman picture meme.

Also, would one pet troll really make much difference to an overall score? I doubt it, as it would be like one person pissing into the sea off Hull and expecting Holland to flood.

Probably zero difference. The top and bottom 5% of the raw scores are not used by the algorithm that calculates the story's rating. That would remove the 1-bomb from consideration.

@Pixy

Perhaps if a story contained a properly tagged set of antipopulist tropes, I could imagine it getting a minuscule readership.

I vaguely recall a Physics thought experiment at school about how many molecules of Napoleon Bonaparte's last breath we inhaled in each breath we take. (No, I can't remember the calculation or the answer.) And liquids probably disseminate far more slowly than gases. But it makes you wonder, or rather it makes me wonder, how many molecules of each Holstein piss make their way into each bottle of Holsten Pils after a few centuries.

Quite the opposite. I'd been working on some complicated programming and was making more and more mistakes and decided to give my brain a rest.

The programming is still incomplete :-(

In German, we have a proverb: What does the oak tree care if a swine rubs against its trunk?

Don't pigs eat acorns? It will eat all the oak tree's babies!

I thought the oak tree benefitted by having its seeds scattered and fertilised by the pigs?

@solitude

Not being an expert, isn't the acorn the seed? If a pig eats that it would be finito.

Now if a tree rat buries an acorn but forgets where, that benefits furtherance of the parents' genes.

There's possibility the pig doesn't chew properly and swallow some whole. Those would not only be transported a significant distance, but deposited in a pile of dung.

Although, the best friend to an oak is the jay. The bird eats the acorns too, but also, make stashes of them, and not always clear those stashes. Those stashes are often on leyline cross nodes (allegedly for orientation) and oaks love those locations too.

Hmm, you don't really need to block him from READING. And you can ignore his voting easily enough. What you want to do is block his COMMENTS. I don't know if that is possible.

It is, as Lazeez explains above.

Something worthy of consideration is, if a reader is blocked from commenting because they've been abusive, could they also be blocked from voting? It would need site management to moderate because some authors are way too sensitive.

I think that might be more work than is worth it. But then, I know nothing (John Snow) about programming. I would rather Laz spend his time on programming in a coffee machine for the site. I have been asking for that for years...

Oh! And a bacon butty vending machine as well.

Open up a story, collect your coffee and bacon sarnie, lean back, and enjoy...

I suspect you're right. But at least the suggestion is now out there for consideration.
