Prisoner of the Widows.
The MC was a naughty boy and taken into care and the couple who looked after him made him their sole heir. A very minor part of the story.

Yes; that story, (Doc Holladay has properly corrected the title) chapter 13 and about 3/4 of the way down. Jack Gleason's role is explained elsewhere - in England he would have been the parole officer cum guardian

Depends on how much and what type of inheritance. In Finding Home the main character inherits a business empire and also gets another as compensation for the death of his family. A similar situation in Interesting Times and Mack also Odd man in College and Shiloh and at the end of Sorority Staff.
