edit to add: almost anything with the Military or War tags should fit the bill for you.
They are not free, but WEB Griffin has two series, Brotherhood of War and Semper FI, that are really good. For an outside view read Guadalcanal Diary. It too is a good read.
Ka Hmnd has a bunch of fictional war stories, but most of them fall into the category of short stories.
Also the epilogue to 'A Fresh Start' has a portion about desert warfare, and 'A Fresh Start' itself has a couple of sections about warfare from the viewpoint of the people back home.

And how could I forget 'A Charmed Life' by The Outsider. [Just looked to get a link and it's not there any more. Anyone know what happened?
Here you go, LD:

I forgot that was where it was posted. Thanks.
There's another war story told from the viewpoint of two, I wouldn't really call them refugees, escaping to safety through the Cascades after an invasion.

It's Al Steiner's North of the River.

edit: Also most of Greenies is a battle defending Mars from invasion.
Actually, you're both right on this.
While LD's example is accurate for the story he describes, your reference of "North of the River" is to a similar story by Al Steiner and I believe NotR appeared first.

Brotherhood of War
I used to work with a guy who was an X-Army Col. Asked him if he knew anything about the stories. He said he was aware of what had happened, but wouldn't discuss it.
A post from Mr. Fox's blog:
"A Reluctant Hero" is set in Al Steiner's A Perfect World/Greenies universe, in late 2013, early 2014 as World War III begins. The story is done with Al's kind permission.
Is 'Reluctant Here' not listed in the Greenies universe because Al Steiner didn't tag it, or because the author didn't? Just curious whether that means it's common for stories set in Universes to not be listed in them.
it's common for stories set in Universes to not be listed in them.
It's not common for a story not to be listed unless it:
1. isn't a universe open to that author,
2. the author didn't tag it when they could have,
3. it also fits in a conflicting universe or series which it's tagged for.
My Chaos Calls stories fit both the Damsels in Distress universe and my Al Adams series, but I could only put it in one or the other. The only time you can put something in two areas is if it's part of a series that's part of a universe. I can create a series within the DiD universe and place the Chaos Calls stories in that, but n ot in another universe or series.
If Al didn't open his Greenies universe to other authors, they can't tag their stories as members.
My personal opinion is that since the story doesn't really add anything to Al's universe, it wasn't included.
If Al didn't open his Greenies universe to other authors, they can't tag their stories as members.
Greenies is open, not sure if it's public or by application only. You can post to a closed series or universe if you ask the owner of it and they add you to the approved author's list.
