Maybe it's because I'm bored, but…

Switch Blayde 🚫

I happened to see a new story on the home page with:

Sex Contents: No Sex
Tags: Romantic, Slow, AI Generated

Doesn't "slow" mean there's story and plot development before any sex occurs? But if there's no sex…? Hmm.

Does slow then mean it's boring?

I thought that "Slow" means there will be several chapters until the Action picks up; not just sexual content.

Such as Lord of the Rings, with multiple chapters of Bilbo preparing his birthday party, and leaving the Shire. Then Frodo and his preparations, and traveling with his friends...

Basically all of the chapters up until the meeting that forms the Fellowship of the Ring.

Many novels spend multiple chapters revealing the MC, or multiple characters, and "World Building" before the action begins.

For example The Longest Day spends a third of the book/Movie describing the Planning, and other preperations, before June 6th 1944.

That's why I've never used the "Slow" tag. I'm afraid people will think the story is, well, slow in the beginning. Meaning boring.

The SOL definition of the "slow" tag is:

"There is a story and plot development before any sex occurs. Not a stroke story."

What I don't get is authors who use "slow" in a story with less than 500 words.

In a 'no sex' story, there would necessarily be story and plot development before any sex occurs, and it would not be a stroke story. So ... yes? :)

In a 'no sex story' there should be no sex.

'Before any sex occurs' includes the possibility of no sex ever occurring. Until it occurs, if it occurs, it's 'before.'

I have to disagree. The concept of 'before' never is meaningless.

Huh? Is this a drunk post?

A 'no sex' story is exactly that. If it has sex, then the tag should not be there and admin should be alerted so the story code can be removed.

Under the Tab Description section, Slow is in the Others section. According to the description, the story is slow before the sex scenes are encountered. The definition doesn't say that the entire story is slow, but it may be.

Unless it's literary fiction ;-)

464 SOL stories are tagged 'slow' but rated 'no sex'.

I think the current definition of 'slow' is quite recent.

That's the definition I always knew. I don't know about the "stroke" part at the end, but I remember it always being that it takes a while for the sex to begin.

I think the mention of "stroke" (which is what I remember it has always been) is to contrast the slow development with the rapid action of "It was a bright sunny day and I saw [someone] strip and we fucked".

@Switch Blayde

I don't 'remember' the definition but I thought that once upon a time the length of time 'before sex' wasn't specified so authors routinely used it for slow-developing no sex stories.

Oh well, it's clearly defined now so sex seems to be a prerequisite for its use.

I always took slow to mean something like 15 chapters 250+ kb to describe one day.

@ystokes

You can describe one day in less than 20 chapters, I would say that's fast...

Some of Laurell K. Hamilton's 'Anita Blake' dead tree novels cover a remarkably short time span. But somehow, they don't strike me as slow ;-)

You are right. I sent an email to Lazeez about the use of
Slow in a No Sex story.
