Tony Stevens

I have been in contact with "Tony Stevens" - the Baltimore Orioles Baseball writer - for 20 years now, and when he failed to answer a mail I started to worry.

He's gone, 20 days ago. I found the obituary. He was 85 and definitely one of the good guys.

Oh, and he also had some stories on Finestories under another 'nym: https://finestories.com/a/Jerome_Norris

@Dinsdale

My condolences, too many authors have passed away in the past couple of years.
Do you have a link to the obituary? Would be very much appreciated.

@Keet

I would appreciate seeing the link to his obit. PM is fine, although since it's a public document I don't think there's a privacy issue. Thanks in advance.

That's too bad. I enjoyed his baseball stories. RIP.

That's sad ๐Ÿ˜”. Being German, I enjoyed his non-baseball stories more. He had a fine sense of humour and his MCs were refreshingly normal and low key. I hope he was reasonably healthy to the end.

@sharkjcw

I could, but why? Keet and REP maintain the "missing authors" document and they have seen it.

Yes, but Laz manages this site and will update Tony's page with his passing.

Yes, but Laz manages this site and will update Tony's page with his passing.

You mean update as adding one line at the end of his profile?
As with E.B.:

but why?

ReaderInfo is not part of SOL. Many SOL readers aren't aware our website exists.

I thought you would have let Lazeez know that Tony had passed away. I'll sent him an email to let him know.

As anyone who read his stories will know, "Tony" was a long-time supporter of the Baltimore Orioles. He was suffering through their years of being about the worst team in the MLB.
A couple of quotes from last year:

I have noticed in passing that the Mighty Orioles have yet to so much as take a temporary lead in a league contest. (Their complete and utter collapse, with no sign of revival, has been one of my greatest disappointments. Like the guy in the movie said, "I wish I could get quit of them." (But I have tried and I cannot.))

(that was after hours before they won their first game of 2022).

My Birds have won five straight for the first time in two years. Definitely encouraging for those of us with a flexible "before I die" timetable for their return to respectability.

Was around 5-6 weeks after Adley Rutschmann's debut and the sudden improvement, they made it to 10 wins in a row.

One year later they have just gone top of the strongest division in the MLB. He would have been so happy. I'll be raising a glass to his memory this evening.

One of "Tony's" later stories was Whatever It Takes, it's about an infielder "with a low average and no pop in your bat" who manages to turn himself into a pitcher. Baltimore has a "Freddie Brumbelow" now, it's Anthony Nunez and he made his MLB debut on Saturday. Two innings of unblemished relief, the Mets had traded him to Baltimore at the end of July 2025.
