Changes at SOL

Posted at Updated:

It is possible by now that you have noticed changes at SOL. I'm assuming that these changes resulted from some person or group threatening to sue SOL if the changes were not made. If it actually went to court, SOL would win, because neither SOL nor the authors there have done anything illegal in the United States. Winning a frivolous lawsuit still means you have to hire a lawyer, and after you win the same person or group will happily sue you again. They will do that until you are bankrupt. Hence the changes.

Now, I have to be careful, here, because D2D, the company that bought smashwords.com, recently banned me for life from publishing anything at smashwords. They de-listed all my books and informed me I can never publish there again, under any pen name at all. Their stated reason for this was because, in my author profile, I talked about freedom of speech and censorship and said that if a customer sent me a copy of the receipt for the book, I'd send them an uncensored version of the book for free. This apparently announced to the world that books containing underage sex exist in the world, and that I was using their platform to advertise that. This violated their standards so violently they took the described action.

The loss of that income stings, and I don't want any other publishers to ban me, too, so that's why I'm being careful about what I'm saying.

In the past I tried to post two free things for every book I put up for sale. With the new requirements I knew Laz would have to delete most of what I've posted over the years. So I downloaded everything to preserve it on my computer. In the future I'll continue to write as I always have, but I'll edit the material so it can be posted at SOL. I am already in the process of editing everything I have for sale at bookapy.com and in the future everything I publish there will conform to the new standards. I'll keep the original for myself, which is fine, because I write mostly for myself. I know some others enjoy it, too, which is why I posted it.

When I post something on SOL I'll probably publish it for sale on bookapy.com, too. If you buy a book that seems a little off, in places, and would like to discuss that with me, you can sent me mail through SOL or write to me directly at merely.bob at gmail dot com. Because I'm so busy, I'd ask you to send me proof of purchase because I only have time to chat with actual customers. I'm not going to send you anything. We'll just chat, maybe about the process of editing books or whatever.

To the moral police, I'll say this. I do not believe that persons under the age of 18 engage in sexual behavior. I believe that as much as you do. I do not condone underage sex, even if it's legal. I understand that the age of consent, which is below 18 in may states, is an aberration and an abomination. Even if I accidentally write something that has an age of consent under 18 in it, I will certainly never send that to any human being. Everything I post at SOL or publish at bookapy.com will comply strictly with the new standards. There will be no underage sex in anything I post or publish. I'm not offering to send anybody anything that contains perfectly legal underage sex. Anything I write is my opinion only and neither SOL nor bookapy.com is responsible for anything I produce.

To the rest of you, I wish you happy reading. Thank you for doing that. I hope I get to chat with some of you. We've been friends a long time and I hope that friendship can continue.
